Spoke Too Soon
Members of the gay and lesbian community and the Salt Lake Board of Realtors got caught up in a whirlwind tizzy this week when Equality Utah accused the realtors of sticking their collective noses into an issue that is none of their concern. The gay-rights activists then retracted that accusation an hour later.

The misunderstanding began when Mike Thompson of Equality Utah sent an e-mail to members of the gay community that the Utah Association of Realtors took a position in support of Rep. LaVar Christensen's HB148, which codifies when someone can stand in for the biological parent to act as guardian of a child. The bill basically thwarts the ability of a guardian to do so without the express permission of the biological parent. The gay community sees the bill as an attack on the ability of a gay or lesbian partner to stand in as a parent to a child brought into the relationship.

"This is a very sensitive issue (which) should be addressed by family law attorneys," said the e-mail, which urged members to call the realtors and tell them to butt out.

A little later, Thompson sent a follow-up e-mail retracting what he said before.

That's because when the realtors started getting calls about the issue, they had no idea what the callers were talking about. The realtors have not taken a position on the bill and said so in no uncertain terms.

Just another day on the hill.

Cheers,
Paul Rolly
