Towner was a Republican candidate for State Senate District 2, which currently is held by Democrat Scott McCoy. But Towner was defeated at the Salt Lake County Convention Saturday by GOP rival Joe Jarvis.
In a letter to State Republican Chairman Joe Cannon, Towner resigned from his positions on the Republican State Central Committee and the Republican Party's Audit Committee.
He said that during his Senate District's caucus meeting on Saturday, Ridgway came into the meeting and handed out a letter to caucus members that was very critical of Towner and, according to him, was slanderous.
Republican rules prohibit literature being handed out at caucus meetings. Instead such distribution is limited to the main convention floor. Towner said Ridgway's ''slanderous'' comments about him stem from Ridgway's unhappiness in the past toward the party's credentials committee, on which Towner was a member.
Ridgway, who is running against Sen. Orrin Hatch for the Republican nomination, has been the center of several incidents this
campaign season. He was escorted out of his own precinct caucus meeting in March by security guards after party officials believed he was being too disruptive. His behavior at a Tooele County Republican Central Committee spurred a custodian at the building it was being held to call the police. At the Weber County Convention a little more than a week ago, party officials turned off the microphone after he approached it and began speaking, despite not being on the agenda.
Cheers,
Paul Rolly

Towner is a good Republican and a good guy. This is unfortunate.
Kind of like the pot calling the kettle black.
Towner, your the one who plays dirty tricks. Your also trying to harm Ridgeway's chances, and your stepping on his freddom to speech.
Both of them played dirty tricks here.
