Just Fun and Games
Utah political candidates might be ready to ask officials in the Summit County Democratic Party to stop doing them favors.

You've likely read about the misdemeanor charges filed against Summit County Democratic Chairman Rob Wehyer for offering to reimburse Democratic House candidate Josh Ewing for his campaign expenses if Ewing would agree to drop out of the Democratic Primary against Christine Johnson, who Wehyer is supporting.

Johnson was mortified herself to hear of the offer, fearing it would hurt her own campaign because Wehyer thought he was doing it to help her. She has been adamant that she had nothing to do with the offer and didn't even know what Wehyer was up to.

Now, former Summit County Democratic Chairman Mike Marty, a political ally of Wehyer, has been identified as the person who paid for a full-page ad in the Vernal Express that said, tongue in cheek, Kevin VanTassle should be elected to the State Senate because Zions Bank needs four full-time employees in the Legislature.

That ad not only angered VanTassle and Zions Bank, it exasperated Rep. David Ure, who is VanTassle's Republican Primary opponent in that race. Ure worried that he would be blamed for the ad and the newspaper ran a clarification the next week stating who paid for the ad and that it was not endorsed by any candidate.

Johnson the Democrat and Ure the Republican might want to purchase their own ad directed to Summit County Democrats: "Go help somebody else."

Cheers,
Paul Rolly
