Joining the Feeding Frenzy
With all the negative publicity lately about Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt's family charities/tax shelters and his personal use of a government plane usually reserved for medical emergencies, Republicans are getting bold about making fun of Utah's former governor for Utah.

Or, perhaps they feel Leavitt's recent troubles is their opportunity to shed some long-held resentments toward the politician.

The State Republican Party sponsored a golf tournament at Thanksgiving Point last week to raise funds for Republican legislative candidates.

Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. did not participate in the golf tournament, but he showed up at the barbecue afterward and lent his name to the event to help raise more money.

Speaking to the crowd, the governor said he was happy to help his fellow Republicans by attaching his name to the event. Then he added that unlike some predecessors, "I won't even take a cut."

That comment got some laughs and it was not lost on anybody who he was referring to. Republicans often quietly resented Leavitt's tendency to take some of the money raised at Republican events for his own political war chest if he showed up at the event.

He also ruffled some Republican candidates with his plethora of personal fund-raisers, which often left nothing but crumbs for other GOP candidates.

One wonders, though, if Huntsman would have dared make such a crack about a Bush Administration cabinet member if Leavitt wasn't already in the cooker because of the recent bad publicity.

Cheers,
Paul Rolly
