Alexander, you may remember, sponsored a bill in 2003 that proposed to remove the not-for-profit tax exemption for the larger credit unions. That bill resulted in a task force to study the issue.
Alexander later sponsored a resolution asking Congress to recognize states' rights to tax federally chartered credit unions.
But Alexander is being challenged in his leadership position by Rep. Dave Clark, R-St. George. And the considerable number of bank lobbyists, according to legislative sources, have been talking up Clark's assets to Republican legislative candidates expected to win and join the Legislature for the first time this year.
Clark is a Zions Bank official, which apparently means he is even more valuable to the banks that the apparently expendable Alexander.
Cheers,
Paul Rolly
