The Gala is Back
Remember the old days when former Gov. Mike Leavitt used to have more fund-raisers than United Way and he used to rile other Republicans by sticking his hand out for cash so often they feared he would deplete the donor pot and leave little for them?

And remember how Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. said he would not have galas and doubted he would try to raise much for his re-election bid in 2008? He did say he would have fund-raisers to pay off the personal loans he made to his 2004 campaign, but implied the days of the Leavitt-style galas were over.

Well, they're not.

Huntsman is having a $250-per-plate rubber-chicken event at the Salt Palace on Oct. 13 and the usual suspects (lobbyists) who shook people down for cash during the Leavitt years have been summoned to sell tickets to the Huntsman event.

And if you notice the date — Oct.. 13 — it's right around the time state legislative and county candidates will be trying to stick their hands in the pockets of Republican donors who now must throw dough at Huntsman in order to feel warm and comfy in the political landscape.

Also, remember the criticism aimed at Sen. Bob Bennett for accepting donations from lobbyists and others currying his favor to pay off his debt from the 1992 campaign?

Just a thought.

Cheers,

Paul Rolly

Mr. Rolly, you have just stated the obvious. I am not critiquing the information in your article, I am just noting that this is no surprise me and probably not so surprising to you either.

Governor Huntsman is just as big a political money making protégé as former governor Leavitt. Governor Huntsman just needed time to get the script down.
