Some residents were concerned and the Republicans jumped on it right away with a press release claiming illegal activity by using the university's block U logo.
The campaign piece contained endorsements from former University of Utah president Bernie Machen as well as prominent Democrats Kem Gardner, Norma Matheson and J.D. Williams. Gardner said he signed the endorsement statement but didn't know it was going on a flier containing the block U.
The university immediately issued a statement from President Michael K. Young stating it is inappropriate for any candidate to use the block U and imply any endorsement from the U.
Romero says he has apologized and has altered an ad he has been running in the University of Utah's Daily Utah Chronicle that had contained the block U until today. Meanwhile, last-minute attack ads from the Republican Party accused Democratic Rep. Roz McGee of voting for a $15 million Capitol Hill parking garage and failed to fund $2 million to cover the dental bills of 40,000 poor and disabled Utahns.
The flier, from Republican opponent Thomas Wright, failed to mention the Republican Legislature passed the $15 million parking garage allocation and McGee never got a chance to vote on the dental bill coverage because the Republican leadership never let the issue get to the floor for a vote.
One of Wright's fliers also depicts the University of Utah's sign, with its name and date it was founded.
Also, the Republicans sent an 11th hour flier against Democratic Senate candidate Trisha Beck, showing a picture of Al Gore and claiming Beck supports legalizing medical marijuana. It depicts her with reddened eyes in an apparent attempt to imply she is a drug user.
In fact, Beck has never advocated legalizing medical marijuana and is an active and faithful member of Utah's predominant church. Karl Rove, where are you hiding?
Cheers,
Paul Rolly
