Sixteen years ago, when Democratic Salt Lake County Sheriff Pete Hayward lost his job in an upset to Republican Aaron Kennard, Hayward was so bitter he wouldn't let Hayward come anywhere near his office until the new candidates were sworn in the January following the November election. Then he cleaned out his office in the night
before the change of hands and left without meeting with Kennard.
This year Kennard was the unexpected loser to Democrat Jim Winder, one of his deputies, in a race that pitted Sheriff's personnel against their own colleagues and featured accusations of inappropriate behavior on both sides.
But after Kennard lost, he proved to be no Hayward.
Kennard already has allowed Winder to move into his office, has opened up the records to Winder so he can bring himself up to speed on the issues and activities of the office by the time he officially takes over in January, and he is allowing Winder to shadow him so he can introduce him to everyone he needs to be acquainted with before officially taking over the job.
Kudos to a class act in Kennard, who is showing he places the good of the office above partisanship, which is a trait all to rare in politics these days.
Cheers,
Paul Rolly
