Paper Tigers
Senate Minority Leader Curtis Bramble, who burst on the scene as a Republican bull in a china shop six years ago, and his sidekick Rep. Becky Lockhart, a veteran conservative legislator whose husband Stan was the Utah County GOP Chairman, would appear to be among the most powerful movers and shakers in Utah County.

But appearances can be misleading. Bramble and Lockhart apparently lobbied among Utah County delegates hard for Chris Herrod to replace fellow Provo Rep. Jeff
Alexander, the House majority leader who resigned late last year.

But delegates gave equal support to John Curtis and sent the names of both Curtis and Herrod to Jon Huntsman Jr. Huntsman noted that Utah law precludes him from choosing from two. The law dictates he receive one name from the party.

Curtis ran against Bramble as a Democrat in 2000, which may be one of the reasons he and Lockhart (the nickname for the two Utah County allies is "Bramhart") lobbied for the other guy.

An irony here is that Lockhart is the one who sponsored the law giving the party, rather than the governor, the final say.

The fact that the delegates in that district had enough disregard for the pleadings of Bramhart shows the Senate majority leader and his trusty helper may not have as much clout in their home territory as they think.

Bramble actually has flirted with the idea of running for Congress against fellow Republican Chris Cannon. He might want to rethink that, given the apparent shakiness of his power in Utah County.

Last year, Bramble ran for Republican National Committeeman to replace Winston Wilkinson, who resigned after he was appointed to a position in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Bramble was creamed by Salt Lake County business owner Fred Lampropoulos.

Cheers,
Paul Rolly

Jeff Alexander's Replacement
This comes by way of the House Majority Site:

"The Utah Republican Party Chairwoman, Enid Greene, chose the replacement for retired House member Jeff Alexander this afternoon. Chris Herrod was named as the new legislator to represent House District 62...."

I wish Bramble would make up his mind. One day, he's a paper tiger, and the next day he's the dread Sith Lord.

People need to know that Bramble isn't being consistent. Maybe we could call him a flip-flopper because he's impotent one day and omnipotent the next day. One day, he gets trounced, the next day he prevails.

Keep up the good work, Paul. Stories like this reinforce your reputation for fairness and intellectual honesty.
