Party Crashers
Last week when officials of Real Salt Lake had a celebratory press conference thanking legislators and other government brass for approving a money grab from Salt Lake County to help fund infrastructure for a new soccer stadium Sandy, Rodney Dangerfield came to mind.

The late comedian, famous for his "I don't get any respect" monologues, could have been standing with Senate Democratic leaders Mike Dmitrich of Price and Gene Davis when Salt Lake Real owner Dave Checketts gushed all over Republican Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr., and Republican legislative leaders while not acknowledging the presence of Dmitrich or Davis.

The reality is that the legislation paving the way for the stadium would not have passed without the Democrats. The House tallied 48 yes votes, 10 more than the 38 needed for approval, but 12 of those votes were from Democrats. The Senate needed 15 ayes for approval, got 20, and six of them were from Democrats.

But it was a one-party party when the accolades were dished out.

In fact, one Real representative shoved Davis out of the way in his haste to give personally named jerseys and ceremonial scarves to House Speaker Greg Curtis and other Republicans at the press conference.

No jerseys or scarves for the Democrats.

At least some lobbyists have the decency to include Dmitrich, Davis and a few other Democratic leaders to Utah Jazz games once in a while.

Cheers,
Paul Rolly
