Republican Love Fest
You might say that Salt Lake City mayoral candidate Keith Christensen ventured into the belly of the beast Thursday night when he made a presentation before the Salt Lake County Lincoln Club, arguably the most partisan Republican group in the county.

Christensen has strong Republican credentials, but he also is endorsed and vocally supported by liberal Mayor Rocky Anderson, one of the most high-profile critics of President George W. Bush.

But Club Chairman Duane Millard said Christensen was "very impressive" and received a good reception from the group, as did fellow Republicans running for mayor, David Buhler and J.P. Hughes.

"They all were impressive," said Millard.

The group also gave its annual legislative awards to Republican lawmakers from Salt Lake County.

Named "Legislator of the Year" was Sen. Carlene Walker of Cottonwood Heights, who Millard described as "the omnipresent legislator. She shows up and participates in everything."

Named Freshman Legislator of the Year was Rep. Carl Wimmer of Herriman, who Millard referred to as Rep. 541. "That's because he can bench press 541 pounds," said Millard, meaning he never will be called a "girly man" by California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The "Friend of the Taxpayer" award went to Salt Lake County Council member Mark Crocket. The "Mary Todd Lincoln" award went to Rep. Sylvia Andersen, a newcomer to the Legislature who "displayed a lot of class." Sen. Chris Buttars of West Jordan was honored for his work on the Drug Offender Reform Act and Salt Lake County District Attrney Lohra Miller was given the "Campaign of the Year" award.

Sen. Orrin Hatch got the "Republican of the Year" award, but he wasn't there to accept it in person.

Millard joked that he has not been able to duplicate the efforts of founding club chairman Jon Huntsman Sr., who was able to get Ronald Reagan to one of the meetings. Millard couldn't even get Hatch.

Cheers,
Paul Rolly
