I wrote in this blog a while back that State Treasurer Ed Alter, who has announced he will not seek re-election next year when he finishes his 28th year in the office, is touting his chief deputy, Richard Ellis, to be the guy to take his place. Alter has taken Ellis around to Republican mover-and-shaker groups to introduce him around and recommend him for the job.
Apparently, some legislators haven't been overly thrilled with the idea of a monarchy, where the current throne-holder gets to name his successor. And in Utah, you can bet whoever gets the Republican nomination will be Alter's successor.
So a group of legislators have approached one of their own - Rep. Mark Walker, R-Sandy, who works in sales, marketing and cash management for Zions Bank - to possibly run for the job.
Walker, who is in his second term in the Legislature, acknowledged he has been approached by some of his colleagues and that he is interested. "But it's still a little far out at this point."
He said he enjoys being in the Legislature, so it would be a tough decision to leave the House to run for state treasurer. On the other hand, Walker is in a swing district, so every re-election bid will be a tough one. He won by just a handful of votes last fall.
Cheers,
Paul Rolly

Rep Walker is a rising star and would make a fantastic treasurer.
He's fiscally conservative, smart and very charismatic.
Run, Mark, Run!!
Ellis is just another sniveling beauracrat sucking on the cow's sour cream.
Anyone from the private sector would be better. This Walker guy sounds good enough for me.
Why do we even have a state treasurer? What's he got in his treasury anyway? Money? Huntsman's gold bars? Canadian Whiskey?
Are Alter and Ellis members of Opis Dei. Are they Freemasons?
What are the hiding!!! What!!
