While the move appeared shockingly sudden (Greene gave Hartley an hour to move his stuff out of the office and leave) Greene says it has been brewing for some time.
"Jeff and I just strongly disagree on fundamental principles of how things should be run in the party," Greene told me after I
learned of the firing.
The party has been carrying a fairly significant debt and Greene said that was one of the main issues. She said she and Hartley disagree on how much debt should be carried.
She says she was prepared to fire Hartley a few months ago, but Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr.'s office intervened on behalf of Hartley and she agreed to hold off until a new chairman is elected at the state convention in June.
But when Fred Lampropoulos, who was Huntsman's choice to succeed Greene when her term expires in June, said last week he was not interested in the job and the governor announced he would not intervene on the selection of a new chairman, Greene felt her earlier agreement with Huntsman to keep Hartley was no longer binding, so she went ahead and fired him.
Greene says she will be the acting executive director, handling the day-to-day activities of the party, along with her
duties as state chairman.
Greene became acting chairman of the party in November, when Cannon left to become editor of the Deseret Morning News. She was named chairman in February.

Enid Greene is one of the most loathsome, vile, and narcissitic people I have met in all my years. The Republican Party would be well advised to dump her as soon as possible.
As for the debt issue as a reason to fire the Part Executive Director, that is a red herring. The Chair and Vice Chair are responsible to raise money for the Party. She can only blame herself for this. Scapegoating Hartley is ridiculous. Of course, for Enid, it's always somebody else's fault, never her own.
Good luck to Jeff. He helped to largely stem the tide that brutalized Republicans nation wide, losing just 1 legislative seat to Democratic control. The real winner in all of this is the Democratic Party. Memo to Todd Taylor: 2008 is the time to pounce.
This is a very sad time for the Utah GOP, when someone like Enid "Money-Siphoning, Dumped from Congress" Greene is charading as the "The Good Guy."
Fact is, I wonder how involved Ms. Greene has been with the party during her service as Vice-Chairwoman and now as Chairwoman...
Afterall, this is a person who was not only kicked out of Congress by her constituents, but also ran as the GOP candidate for Lieutenant Governor during a Primary Election in which she was concurrently surving as the State GOP Vice-chair!
Not to mention that she forced other State GOP staffers to join her campaign for lieutenant governor in fear of retribution....
In any case, this is shocking and disturbing news.
The GOP might just now be in dire straights.
Replying to GOP Sniper: The Utah Republican Party was already in dire straits. Jeff Hartley's departure could help; it can't make it worse. At least if Enid is in the office for a few months, the Salt Lake County Republican officers won't be running the State Party as they have been.
replying to "christie" - ummm, do you even know anything about which you speak?
your comments, "christie," prove that you lack the information to make an informed decision on anything, much less those relative to the functions of the Republican Party in Utah.
Enid Green and her husband STOLE nearly $1 million dollars BACK IN THE DAY FROM HER OWN FLESH AND BLOOD, and now she is in control of the Republican Party's day-to day operations and books!!!!!
That is sooooooo the Utah Republican way! Putting her in charge of the books and the day-to-day operations is like putting a pedophoile in charge to watch over your children....GO UTAH GOP!
