Wearing Two Hats
Joe Hunter, Utah Congressman Chris Cannon's chief of staff, has been hired by Parents for Choice in Education as a campaign strategist for the referendum vote on vouchers this year.

That group is part of a coalition that will try and defeat the ballot proposal to repeal the voucher bills passed by the Legislature earlier this year.

Hunter will continue as Cannon's chief of staff, but will carefully monitor his time proportions between his job in the congressional office and his campaign work for the pro-voucher vote to make sure he doesn't do anything improper while on the taxpayer dime.

"Anything I do will be fully vetted. I will make sure everything is proper," he said.

Still, when juggling different jobs with different messages, it's easy to get mixed up.

Perhaps we'll see messages from the voucher advocates like, "Defeat the referendum. Vouchers represent choice. And by the way, if your kid gets sexually harassed by a gay Republican member of Congress, it's the kids fault." Or, "The public school system is a monopoly. Vote to keep vouchers. And remember what Monica Lewinski did to Bill Clinton."

Cheers,
Paul Rolly

A few years ago at Boys State, a member of Rep. Cannon's staff -- I don't remember if it was Mr. Hunter -- when asked about good school facilities noted that Jesus and Socrates, the greatest teachers of all time, didn't need a building and air conditioning. 'nuff said?
