The Front Runner
Utah's House of Representatives should have one more woman at January's general session than it had a year ago.

Watch for community activist Rebecca Chavez-Houck to replace Ralph Becker in House District 24, which represents Salt Lake City's Avenues area. Becker, who has been the House minority leader, is leaving the Legislature after winning the city's mayoral election. Chavez-Houck has been actively campaigning for the seat, which will be decided by a vote of the delegates in that district sometime in December. Party officials say others have expressed interest, but they had no names of anyone who has given official notice of running for the seat.

Chavez-Houck has been active at the Legislature lobbying on several issues and has been involved in several non-profit organizations. She worked for Centro de la Familia, providing health and social services for Latino families. She is a past board president for Planned Parenthood and was public relations manager for the Utah Museum of Natural History.

She most recently has been communications director for the House Minority Caucus.

Attorney Jane Marquardt, who also well respected in the Democratic Party and has been active in Equality Utah, was mentioned as a possible candidate to replace Becker, but she now is supporting Chavez-Houck.

If Chavez-Houck is successful, she will become the 16th woman in the 75-member House and for the first time, the 20-member Democratic Caucus will be evenly divided between men and women.

Cheers,
Paul Rolly
