Empty Chair at the Table
Just when it looked like the Utah Democratic Party was as toothless as a party could get, with such little clout in the Utah Legislature and other seats of government, it lost a seat at the table of the National Democratic Committee.
The state party was notified recently that because Utah's naitonal committeeman, Bill Orton, had missed three meetings in a row, he was removed from the committee, leaving the state with no national committeeman in the meetings where members devise party policy and strategies.
State Democratic Chairman Wayne Holland complained to the national folks, who explained the expulsion is an automatic response when someone misses three meetings. So Holland sent in a formal request and Orton was reinstated.
Orton has had a series of health problems and had open heart surgery several months ago.
His term is up this summer and Salt Lake County Councilman Joe Hatch, the former Salt Lake County Democratic Chairman, says he likely will run for the seat.

Cheers,
Paul Rolly

Hatch? He's a great councilman for sometimes liberal Salt Lake County, but our next committeeman should be someone who better represents all Utah Democrats. Someone like Steve Olsen, or Christian Burridge, or Pete Ashdown.
