Just Off the Presses
While things have been quiet for months on Utah's political front, with no names surfacing to challenge Utah's incumbents in major races, the political landscape has suddenly become fluid.

Just a couple of hours ago, I wrote that Salt Lake County Republican Chairman James Evans was considering challenging Democratic County Council member Randy Horiuchi in next November's election. Evans at the time confirmed he was looking at it.

But Evans just called me back because of a discussion he had at a luncheon. Now, he says, B Murphy is strongly considering a run at the County Council against Horiuchi.

"I won't do it if B does it," says Evans. He said Murphy told him at the luncheon he is looking closely at that race.

Murphy is a well-known local entertainer and one-time member of the popular singing group "The Platters." He performs at many local events. He also is a longtime director of a youth choir locally. Murphy was for many years an executive at Zions Bank and currently is marketing and promotions manager for Modern Display.

Meanwhile, Evans now says he may run against Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon. He says he is in continuous talks with party leaders about that possibility.

Cheers,
Paul
