Shoe's on the Other Foot

With all the news reports lately of lobbyists lavishing hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of gifts and favors on legislators, Sen. Howard Stephenson reportedly was a little hurt that no one picked up on his personal act of charity.

The Draper Republican reported that he gave a lobbyist a gift.

The act of kindness actually was the result of lobbyist Spencer Stokes' organizing a makeover for a young intern of Stephenson during last year's legislative session. Stokes and others bought the less-than-chic intern new clothes and treated him to a cool hair cut. Some of the the female interns reportedly wept when they saw the new hunk that emerged from the old rube.

Stephenson opened up his wallet - from his campaign account - and paid Stokes for his expenses and trouble. Then he reported the expense on his campaign disclosure report.

But nobody noticed.

Cheers,
Paul Rolly
