Jonny, I Hardly Knew Ye
Politico reported Tuesday about former Vice President Dick Cheney's praise for Jeb Bush as a potential Republican presidential nominee in 2012. And that brings up the question about old friends and loyalties.

Politico's Andy Barr was quoting from Cheney's interview on Fox News, where Jeb Bush was the only name Cheney mentioned when discussing presidential hopefuls for the Republicans.

“I like Jeb. I think he's a good man. I'd like to see him continue to stay involved politically,” Cheney said during an interview with Fox News’ Neil Cavuto. “I'd probably support him for president.”

So does that mean Cheney isn't planning any more fishing trips with Jon Huntsman Sr. in the near future.

Cheney and the senior Huntsman have been close friends, with Huntsman being a guest of Cheney's in Wyoming and the two joining up for several fishing trips in Idaho (Thankfully, Huntsman did not go hunting with Cheney).

So with the son of Cheney's good friend being prominently mentioned as a potential presidential hopeful for the GOP in 2012, why the snub?

Perhaps Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. has committed too many mortal sins for the conservative wing of the Republican Party that Cheney seems to be in love with. After all, supporting civil unions and climate change initiatives might just be too much to bear for old Dick, trout fishing excursions or not.

After all, Cheney has also told interviewers he would rather see Rush Limbaugh than Colin Powell as the face of the Republican Party. Actually, that gives Cheney something in common with Democratic leaders.
Cheers,
Paul Rolly
