Undefeated Championship Matchups:
For the first time in Utah history, two championship games the same season match undefeated teams. Of course, one took place last Saturday when North Summit spoiled Millard's perfect season, won its sixth state title and secured its first undefeated season in 82 years of football.
This season's other one - and only the 17th such game ever - will pit Pine View (13-0) against Timpview (12-0) on Friday.
Player Update:
Jordan's Cody Raymond didn't catch a TD pass against Hunter a couple of weeks ago, but he still tied the all-time career touchdown reception record with 41. He also tied the season reception record of 86.
Raymond finished with 3,326 career receiving yards, second on the all-time list and caught 198 passes during his career, also good for second-best all-time.
Union's Rhen Richard passed for a whopping 424 yards against Judge Memorial last week - a semifinal game record and 13th best-ever in a game. He upped his career passing yards to 5,728, the 10th best all-time career performance. Earlier this year, against Uintah, Richard had 512 yards of total offense, the sixth-most ever and just the seventh time on record that anyone has gone over 500 yards of total offense.
Against Alta, Bingham's Justin Sorensen kicked the 28th field goal of his career, beating the old record by six. It was his 15th field goal this year, two short of tying the season record. He also kicked 54 extra points this year, well shy of the state-record of 81, but boosted his career PAT mark to 117, which ranks sixth all-time.
Milestones:
North Summit's Jerre Holmes won his fourth state title, including three at Rich, and became the fifth Utah prep coach to win championships at two different schools. The last was Steve Dangerfield (Viewmont, 1971, and Brighton, 1982).
Pine View, in its 25th season, is playing its 250th game. Of this Friday's six finalists, only Pine View has never won a state football title.
