Not quite.
The Lancers were relaxed, cracking jokes, and confident at practice on Monday night. They watched some Alta film, went over some things on the chalkboard, then had a light practice in the cold and under the lights in their stadium.
''It's the same,'' said Layton coach Jim Batchelor. ''They're excited. They've been excited since they got to the playoffs. They're ready to go.''
Assistant coach Robert Ferneau playfully argued with a couple of his running backs after a punt by Chad Willson nearly hit him in the head. Ferneau said the errant punt was going to cost him some carries, while Willson inferred that Ferneau wouldn't do something like that to hurt the team.
I can't write what Ferneau's response was, although it was hilarious.
Bottom line: Layton isn't overwhelmed or nervous about playing the Hawks. It isn't in the team's personality to have its nerves wound up before or during a game.
''We're a bunch of funny guys,'' said running back LaVaughn Jackson. ''We try to stay relaxed, make jokes in the huddle just to calm everyone down.''
Batchelor said don't mistake the team’s looseness for not being ready to give Alta everything it has in the 5-A championship on Friday.
''Win, lose, or draw, they're happy they got here, but they're not satisfied,'' Batchelor said. ''We want to go down and play and we want to win it, as anybody would.''
