Girls' basketball: 1A thoughts
There were some close quarterfinal games yesteday, which will only make today's semifinal games that much more interesting. Today's schedule: Rich vs. Intermountain Christian, 6 p.m. Panguitch vs. Piute, 7:30 p.m.

After watching these four teams last night, here are some thoughts:

Rich definitely has to be the most balanced team in the tournament. The Rebels are ignited by point guard Brittani Groll. She's feisty and although she's small, she's not afraid to drive the ball inside. Players like Allie Eastman and Torey Smith are solid contributors. Eastman is a good shooter and Smith can really clean up on the offensive glass. The Rebels are the favorite but they will have to be more sharp than they were yesterday against Bryce Valley. Rich played well, but the pace of the game was slow and wasn't the best preparation for today's semifinal game against ICS.

Intermountain Christian is on a high as it beat a tough Monticello team in overtime yesterday. The Lions have a very solid core of seniors -- guards Brooke Anderson, Monica Schwarz and forwards Rebekah Jongert and Ashely Moore -- and it'll be up to the seniors to pull out a win over the Rebels. The Lions' strength is defense, but Jongert and Moore stepped up huge offensively last night. They'll need that again against Rich.

Panguitch is the underdog of the tournament. The Bobcats will be facing the third No. 1 seed they've faced in this tournament today against Piute but their confidence is up. Panguitch shot very well yesterday against Green River and were composed in the second half when they extended a small lead. The Bobcats execute well, are good shooters and know their opponent. The Bobcats lost to Piute twice during region. Panguitch will give Piute a good game today.

Piute is a very good team. Although the team is young, the Thunderbirds are solid at every position. Freshman guard/forward Kandice Gleave had 27 points last night. Sophomore guard Loni Allan is a spark plug, offensively. Sophomore centers Amanda Bagley and Shelby Millett form a tough duo in the paint and are tenacious rebounders. Piute has to be the favorite in this matchup, but it is hard to beat a team three times.
