Wrestling: Quick hits from the state tournament
Now, it's really starting to get good. After two days of wrestling at the McKay Events Center in Orem, there's more wrestling to go. And what remains can't-miss action.

Take, for example, Uintah's Candace Workman, who's about to make history. Well, she's already made some history, but the junior is about to do something great. If she beats a wrestler who she has beaten twice -- in Cedar City's Dallas Gale -- in the semifinals of the 103-pound weight class at the Class 3A championship, Workman will become the first female in state history to reach the state final.

If that's the case, Workman will likely face Delta junior Chasen Tolbert with the opportunity to become just the second female in the country to win a state title. Alaska's Michaela Hutchinson is the only female wrestler to ever win the state title, and she did it two years ago. But her chances are sort of slim, since Tolbert has beaten Workman twice this season, and has beaten her pretty good both times; one was a pin and the other was a near technical fall.

But it wouldn't be so bad for Workman.

"I'm not so much nervous," Workman said. "I'm more excited because one of my major goals is to make it to the finals."

Her match starts at 1 p.m.

Other things to look forward to are:

-- Viewmont's Nate Larsen will face Bingham's Ryker Vandertoolen -- the last person to beat Larsen, in last year's state semis. However, Larsen faced Vandertoolen earlier in the year and won -- though Vandertoolen said he has improved very much since then.

-- Wasatch's Jake Salazar gave up his first in-state takedown all year against Grantsville's Austyn Vickers, who, even though he later got pinned in 1 minute, 32 seconds, celebrated the small victory by lifting his arms in the air.

-- Springville's Jason Chamberlain showed no sort of weaknesses in his three matches this week, as the senior and the No. 1 wrestler in the country in the 140-pound division will likely become a four-time state champion. The only other wrestler this week that has a shot at that achievement is Monticello's Aaron Butler. If the two win the state titles in their respective classifications, Chamberlain and Butler would be only the 14th and 15th four-time state winners in state history.
