Softball: A look at this week's games
This is a pretty important week for Utah softball, as there are several important games in the next few days.

On Tuesday, Viewmont travels to Plain City to play Fremont -- in a game between two of the best teams in Region 1. Fremont stands atop the region with a 9-1 record, and Viewmont sits in second at 8-2. The last time the two teams played, it wasn't much of a game, with the Silverwolves banging out a 9-1 victory over Viewmont.

I think it's going to be a lot closer this time. Viewmont has been a much improved team since that loss and, thanks to Layton, the Silverwolves are a team that can be beaten.

On Wednesday, Grantsville will try to get back at Bear River for a loss earlier in the season. Playing at home, the Cowboys are on a good streak considering they recently got a win over Tooele, a favorite for the Class 3A state title.

On Thursday, there are two monster games.

The Springville Red Devils have been on a tear since their 2-0 loss to Tooele on April 11, beating their past two opponents by a combined score of 19-1. They shouldn't have a problem with Provo on Tuesday, which would set them up perfectly for a key region rematch with Tooele on Thursday.

Riverton also will look for revenge when it faces Bingham in South Jordan. The Silverwolves faltered against Bingham last time, losing 6-0 and were unable to hit against sophomore pitcher Tori Almond, who struck out 15 batters and allowed only two hits.

If Almond pitches again -- I'm sure she will, since the sophomore has been the starter for all the big games for Bingham -- don't be surprise if the Miners get another win on the Silverwolves.
