Softball: State secrets revealed
OK, I'm hardly this bold, but I'm going to say it.

I think the best-kept secret in Utah softball is Copper Hills' Linnea Ketcher. It's too bad that she plays for an average team, one that is holding on to the final playoff spot in Region 3 with a 2-4 record -- meaning that the Grizzlies would face defending state champion Taylorsville in the first round of the Class 5A championship tournament if it started today.

But back to Ketcher, who's becoming known as one of the deadliest hitters in the state.

Entering this week, the left-handed leadoff batter is hitting a little over .700 and needs just eight more hits to tie the state record of 50. She already owns one major state record: Earlier this season, she had 10 consecutive hits, breaking the old mark of eight. And she's doing all this in a region with top-notch arms, like the ones belonging to Bingham sophomore Tori Almond and Riverton senior Symbree Minniear.

If Ketcher continues to hit like this with four games left before the postseason, she'll likely bring down the state mark for best batting average of .632. It's just too bad that her team plays in a region with Hunter, Riverton and Bingham -- three teams that could make deep runs in the postseason, while Copper Hills is trying to forget about missing the playoffs completely last season.

Maybe at this point, you're wondering where did she come from? Well, her father, Stan Ketcher, played third base at Brigham Young. Linnea Ketcher grew up with a batting cage in her backyard (random trivia: she was set to play for Taylorsville before her family moved out of the area). And in summer ball, she's known to go on some serious hitting streaks.

"To have this success against [Region 3] pitchers says something," Ketcher recently told a Tribune correspondent. "I'll be happy to break the records, but it won't be satisfying, because I'll want to break those records again next year."

And just in case you want to see Utah's best-kept secret in action, below is the Copper Hills schedule for the remainder of the season:

Today: Kearns at Copper Hills, 3:30 p.m.
Thursday: Copper Hills at West Jordan, 3:30 p.m.
May 6: Bingham at Copper Hills, 3:30 p.m.
May 8: Copper Hills at Hunter, 3:30 p.m.
