There were a couple of key upsets.
The upsets will alter rankings and prove that no team is safe. I thought last Tuesday had its special moments (I mentioned this in an earlier blog entry), but this Tuesday has topped it:
West Jordan defeats Bingham
The first thing you should know is West Jordan sits in fifth place in Region 3, meaning the Jaguars aren't even a playoff team at the moment. But facing arguably the best hurler in Class 5A in sophomore Tori Almond, they supplied one of the biggest upsets of the season to the No. 2 team in the state, according to the Tribune Power Rankings. Julianne Tialavea threw a three-hit shutout, as her Jaguars needed just one run in the fifth to escape with the 1-0 victory.
Sky View defeats Roy
Earlier in the year, the Roy Royals used only five innings to beat a team that some considered overrated, considering the Bobcats were ranked in the state's top five at the time.
But on Tuesday -- with Kelsey Naylor back to her dominating ways -- the Bobcats handed the Royals their first Region 5 loss of the season, and Sky View moved into a tie for the fourth and final playoff spot in the region with Box Elder. Naylor pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts and allowed three hits, which was the complete opposite of what she did in her first meeting this season against Roy.
Minor upsets
Davis surprised Syracuse with a win and Weber gave Northridge a loss in Region 1 action.
Syracuse is trying to claim the fifth and final playoff spot in its region, while Northridge is tied for third with Layton. Neither of the latter teams would want the No. 4 seeding, which means they would play Spanish Fork -- the No. 1 team in the state that is also undefeated -- in the first round of the Class 5A state tournament in three weeks.

Way to go Layton High... and the coaching staff. You turned it around, made the region interesting. Started off 2-4, then went 5-1.. nice job! This is how it should be, teams get better as the season goes on. Credit the coaches. Two tough games left, Northridge & Fremont.
Fremont, in a class of their own… good athletics, good coaching, ready for tournament play. Rock solid.
Viewmont, second in region but may be done, lost pitching and slip sliding away. If they lose to Syracuse, they are really done.
Northridge steady, Weber solid. Both teams playing well at this point of season and in preparation of tournament.
Syracuse High, the big choke... started out 5-2 in first round of region, scoring 6 runs a game and then they go 0-5 the second round and score 1.4 runs a game.. these are very good athletics and had much more potential.. Opposite of Layton. When a team gets worse as the season goes on, you need to look at the coaching staff, in any sport! Don’t make excuses for them, (new school, young team) many other schools have very few seniors and they get better .. Hitting, pitching and fielding has gotten worse with Syracuse.. that means you’re doing something wrong, very wrong. Don’t blame the players… after first round of region Syracuse, needed only one win, (considering Clearfield was a given) to qualify for the state tournament. They now have to beat Viewmont and get help from Layton and/or Northridge to qualify.
Davis win streak at two.. a little too late but can build on this for next year. Davis will win one more for a 4-10 season (region). Not bad considering a 1-9 start.
Poor Clearfield, simply has no talent. Need to drop seniors from the line up and work exclusively with Soph’s and Jr.. look and build to future.
