Boys' soccer: Watch out for Cottonwood
With teams like Bonneville and Bountiful, it was easy to overlook Cottonwood -- a team that just made it into the playoffs as the No. 5 seed from Region 6. But, the Colts made themselves known in this year's Class 4A state tournament when they pulled off the biggest upset in the first round by beating Snow Canyon, the No. 1 seed from Region 9.
The Colts started the season slow, being blown out by Alta 8-0 and starting out with a 3-5-3 record. They hadn't even reached .500 until they beat Snow Canyon. They came into the tournament 6-7-3.
But they found a way to win when it counted the most.
Nelson Krogue, Garrett Young and Diego Rivera all scored in the first half to give the Colts the overwhelming halftime lead. Although the Warriors scored a goal in the second half, they were never able to recover.
Now, Cottonwood -- one of only two Region 6 teams left (East is the other one) -- will face Mountain View in the next round.
