Softball: No true favorites in 5A tourney
After what transpired in the first two rounds of the 5A state softball tournament, the only thing that is certain is that the title will be decided Thursday at noon.

First of all, it's hard to even say Northridge is still in the winners' bracket when you consider the Knights lost two key players -- the Fernandes sisters -- to Woods Cross midseason because of family reasons, and Northridge is the No. 3 seed in Region 1.

Then again, the Knights' region is perhaps the most stacked in the state. All five region teams are still playing, with three of them in the losers' bracket.

Other 5A storylines

-- Bingham lost in the first round. That was the biggest shocker of them all, but it's hard to count out the Miners so soon. Their problem right now is that they'll have to play Spanish Fork, a team that was also shocked early, with the Dons losing to Riverton in the second round, on Tuesday in a consolation game.

-- There are plenty of teams in the losers' bracket that can come back and contend for the state title. That list includes Bingham, Spanish Fork, Weber and Pleasant Grove.

-- Viewmont could cause some serious damage, mainly because Shelbi Tyteca is back to pitching. The junior was out for a couple of weeks during the regular season because of a biceps injury to her right throwing arm.

-- Don't sleep on Pleasant Grove. The Vikings have one of the state's most serious competitors, and she's only a freshman. Pitcher Angie Mikalauski didn't smile once during her outing against Taylorsville, as Warriors slugger Cyd Allen said the freshman will be one of the state's best players in a couple years.
