Football: Carbon quick to replace Tiller, and more
I had a lengthy talk with Carbon principal Greg Stanfield earlier today, in which we discussed the firing of Tim Tiller amid controversy. Stanfield wouldn't go on the record in responding to the accusations Tiller made in the aftermath of his termination, except that Stanfield believes he made the right decision. And Stanfield didn't want to participate in a back-and-forth match with Tiller and his supporters through the media.

But there are a few things he said I could write about.

So, the news first.

Two days after Tiller was reportedly fired via voicemail from Stanfield, the principal announced a replacement. Leo Paur is the new coach. Though Stanfield said he will have a formal release about the hire and the coach's background, the principal said Paur has years of experience and will also become a social studies teacher at Carbon High.

Stanfield repeatedly said he made the right decision in letting Tiller go -- which was backed by Carbon School District superintendent Patsy Bueno, as Bueno noted in an e-mail, "Our high school principal makes decisions that affect his school and his program. This was simply a move to go in a different direction."

In a phone conversation later, Bueno said the decision was obvious since Tiller had "a bad season." Tiller was coming off his first year in which he guided the Dinos to a 2-7 record.

Stanfield also talked about his nearly 30 years in education in Utah, which includes 21 years of coaching and seven as an athletic director. Because of his experience, Stanfield believes he made the right decision.
