Swimming: Utes Sign Six Non-Utahns
The news today from the University of Utah's swimming and diving program doesn't say much about the quality of high school swimming in Utah.

The Utes signed six athletes -- four women and two men -- to national letters of intent in what new coach Greg Winslow is calling the best class in recent history (how would he know?), and not one of the swimmers or divers is from Utah.

The class includes four high school All-Americans, according to a school news release.

The recruits include Whitney Lopus, a fly swimmer from Scottsdale, Ariz.; Hannah Caron, a multiple-event swimmer from Raleigh, N.C.; Sarah Cox, a back, fly and IM swimmer from Scottsdale, Ariz., and Lauren Estes, a breaststroker from Estes Park, Colo.

The male class includes Eric Bonicelli, a fly specialist from Kansas City, Mo., and Major Robinson, a backstroker from Missoula, Mont.

The unusually long high school swim season combined with the "only in Utah" restrictions on club swimming during the 6 month long H.S. season seriously limit the development of potential college swimmers in the state. H.S. swimming often doubles as swim lessons resulting in lower intensity and more crowded practices than elite club swimming and does not train for many college events (200 back, breast, fly & long distance free). As exciting as H.S. swimming is, competition with elite swimmers, national recognition, and college recruiting comes from swimming at USA swimming events such as sectionals and nationals. In most states, H.S. season is short and fun, allowing dabblers to enjoy the sport and try out other sports as well while allowing the dedicated swimmers to enjoy the team aspect of the sport while seriously training for larger goals. Until UHSAA corrects the problems of excessively long season and the rediculous ban on serious training/ coaching Utah will continue to be a backwater of the swim world and UofU and BYUs scholarship money will continue to fund faster swimmers from out of state.
