Football: BYU commit Kaveinga will visit USC
The Web site USCfootball.com is reporting tonight (through Rivals.com) that Uona Kaveinga, the four-star linebacker who committed to BYU last weekend, will visit USC this weekend.

Certainly, that's bad news for Cougar fans. It appears that USC coach Pete Carroll is throwing the full-court press at the 6-foot, 230-pound linebacker, sending coach Ken Norton to Leuzinger High earlier this week to meet with Kaveinga for more than an hour.

It's an interesting article that touches upon Carroll's dislike for taking LDS mission kids, but says he might be willing to make an exception in Kaveinga's case. Kaveinga also talks about delaying his mission until his college career is over.

There's also an interesting line about Norton telling Kaveinga that he could do more good as a representative for his faith in the L.A. area than he could in Provo.

Don't want to give it all away, though -- that's not fair to pay sites such as Rivals.com, IMO.

Yes, I subscribe to both Rivals and Scout (as if you couldn't tell) and find them both to be excellent resources. I try to credit them (and their affiliates) for information I glean from them as much as possible.

One other thing, though, with apologies to author Greg Biggins.

The article says "the entire BYU staff was here to see him [Tuesday] and they will be back in his home tonight [Wednesday]."

Sounds like the Cougars have a battle on their hands -- and they know it.

Jay I heard you talking the other day, I think on channel two or something like that, and you said the Utes have won the recruiting battle thus far and that BYU getting Chambers and Kaveinga almost brings them equal to Utah. Just gotta say I couldn't disagree more with your assessment. Rivals and Scout both disagree with you as well. Care to explain how you are the only person I've seen besides Ute homers that think the Utes have a better class thus far?

Again, Jay, try to hide your glee as a professional.

You guys are nuts. Jay has not shown any bias between Utah and BYU in this blog. He's doing a great job. Do you not know more about your future cougars than you would without him. Keep it up, Jay!

Not to put words in his mouth, but maybe Jay means that this is an unusually great class for Utah. BYU seems to have the same good class they have every year and have always had - 2/3 of the best Mormons and a handful of non-LDS kids who for some reason think they will enjoy Provo. This is just another year for them. But for Utah to have so many 3 and 4 star recruits and to have convinced a few good Mormon kids (even one from Provo) that they can still be good people at the U is more of an anomaly. Just a thought.

Not sure how to respond to this one. I've said it several times, and I will say it again: I am neither a fan nor a hater of either school. I try to be as fair, accurate and balanced as possible.
I think if you go back and look at these blogs as a whole, I've been happy (gleeful?) to report good news for both schools equally.
Anyway, thanks for reading!
Jay

Jay, You could start responding by simply answering the question I posed to you. How do you have the Utes winning the recruiting battle when nobody else agrees with you? Even before BYU received commits from Kav and Chambers both Rivals and Scout still had BYU rated higher than Utah. I'm not trying to say you are a Ute homer(although you're reluctance to explain yourself makes me wonder), I just want to hear your formula for the Utes having a better class?? Thanks.

Rivals and Scout have the y ahead in the rankings due to the fact that they have many more commits than the Utes do. Thats because the y has more scholarships available this year. Why are you cougar fans so defensive ? Try to relax guys. Take a deep breathe and exhale slowly. Recruitng analysts vary on there assesments of recruits. Everyone has different opinions. Im sure they allow you to have opinions in Provo, right ?

Durf,
To answer your question for Jay about why he thinks the Utes are slightly ahead with there recruiting class we can look at Scout.com rankings. The y has more recruits but they average less stars then the Utes recruits. The y recruits average 2.40 stars and the Utah players average 2.83 stars per recruit.Does that make sense ? So youre looking at quality over quantity for the Utes.

Why does everyone care so much about trying to keep the writers and commentators from being "HOMERS?" Truly, I get sick of hearing people complain: "He's such a homer" about him or her or such and such a station, etc. Who cares? Usually the people asserting these accusations are way off on their assessments. Even if they were right-- who cares? I think it would be a lot more exciting if every sports writer/commentator/tv guy had their team-- it would make it more entertaining than being "unbiased." Non-bias is more of a politics thing.

Utah's recruiting class is better than normal. BYU's class is usually better than Utah's, and is even better than that this season. And that's not including the walk-ons like Rich and guys whose talent isn't reflected in the star rankings, such as the star Utah kicker, Sorensen.
