Basketball: Recruitment of Haws heats up
The recruitment of basketball superstar Tyler Haws, a junior at Lone Peak High, took a few interesting twists this past week, according to a source close to the reigning 5A MVP's recruitment.
Bottom line: BYU and Utah aren't the only schools wooing the star guard. Of course, they probably know that.
Stanford coach Trent Johnson was in town on Monday to watch Haws play in a practice at his school. Our source says that Stanford considers Haws one of its top recruits and will push hard to get him to the Pac-10 school. They believe he is very under-recruited right now.
Also, UConn and Duke have recently sent out feelers regarding Haws' interest in them, and Duke assistant coach Steve Wojciechowski has telephoned an intermediary in Utah hoping to set up a time when he can see Haws in person.
UConn has also expressed interest in Pleasant Grove junior C.J. Wilcox recently, our source said.
Of course, Wilcox and Haws were among a group of prep underclassmen that took in the University of Utah's game last Saturday against San Diego State. Pleasant Grove's LeSean Wilcox (C.J.'s cousin), Brighton's Corbin Miller, Provo's Brandon Davies and Bingham's Ben Clifford were also special invitees, along with the two prep seniors that Utah has already signed, Jace Tavita of Brighton and Josh Sharp of Lone Peak.
All of the high schoolers were invited into Utah's locker room and introduced to former Utah standouts such as Tom Chambers, Keith Van Horn and Danny Vranes.

I'm asked a lot about where I think the three most highly recruited juniors in the state -- Haws, C.J. Wilcox and Brandon Davies -- will end up.
My guesses right now after an ongoing dialogue with some people close to the situations -- just guesses! -- are that Wilcox will go to Utah, Davies will go to BYU and Haws will go out of state, probably to Stanford.
It is still really, really early to be predicting such things. But you've asked for it, so there it is.

Jay, have any of these recruits recently attended home BYU games as guests? Just wondering. I think I know the answer but am not sure if you do...or if you care. Probably not as newsworthy as the news that they were guests at the U game.
Vancougar's daily accusation of bias. I love it. Do you harass other news reporters on a daily basis? Let it go van, he's doing a great job. I read as much stuff about Provo here as I do about Utah.
As for the kids - that's great for them. Who was the last Utah prep to be recruited by big time programs? If he can get to Duke, he should go. It's a great place, and Coach K has had good recent experience with a Mormon kid in Matt Christenson. UConn and Stanford would be beautiful places to play too.
Hey, I love seeing these kids recruited by (and even attending) the biggies too. My point is that, although I enjoy this blog, I do detect bias in it and will feel free to say so when I see it. Wish I had the time to make a "daily accusation" but I don't and I don't detect daily problems with it anyway. I expect the U oriented Tribune blogs (there are many of them) to be a bit biased. Same with the one BYU blog (Potkey). But this one is about recruiting and should be more down the middle. It often isn't.
You're a weird dude Van.
Who knew that TWO Ute blogs(one for football/gymnastics and one for basketball) constituted MANY. I haven't verified it yet, but I would bet that the BYU blog has just as many if not more posts on it than both of the Utah blogs combined. As for Jay's blog, it IS right down the middle. I love the info he provides whether it be about the Utes, the Cougars, the Aggies or whatever.
WOW Van....Wow...All you BYU fans are the same. If a reporter doeswn't gush all over BYU and pander to your fan base like the ridiculous Dick harmon than you detect a "bias" When will your fan base grow up? Please, grow up. You are all a bunch of babies. I know its strange to not have a reporter constantly messaging your egos, but deal with it. Maybe you can email Dick Harmon and tell him your feelings are hurt and you two can exchange emails about the big bad meany Ute fans and writers.
Ute Family- Way to show your Ute IQ. 1 BYU fan says something dumb, 2 others disagree, thus "all you BYU fans are the same". I guess that's what you have to tell yourself when it's 0-6 in football and men's basketball the past 2 years and you're University is the middle child in the state. Nothing to brag about related to sports? Go back to the same old character spoofs! You lousy drunk.
Sorry for the burst of reality little guy.
mars- You have no room to be pointing out flaws with other people's posts, considering on an earlier post(feb. 8) you falsely stated that Alex Smith had sexually assaulted someone and that Whittingham had cussed out Unga. You were dead wrong on both counts. I am sure that ute-family was using the word 'all' as a broad way of meaning 'most'. Also, who are the 2 other BYU fans that disagree with vancougar? I count only you and jefe, which I can't tell by jefe's name or his post who he routes for. Although since he refers to BYU as Provo, I would bet he is a Ute fan. Way to show your BYU IQ . . . AGAIN!!
Utethunder- As long as you're lying for the Pukes, why don't you tell us how Marquis Wilson really WASN'T allowed to play football at Utah despite his DUI, when coaches didn't have him miss a single game? Any other facts you want to brush under the rug? Meyer placing BYU logos in urinals? Boilen crying to the refs like a spoiled brat?
mars, mars, mars, . . . At what point did I lie? Since you brought up Wilson's alleged DUI I will assume you think I am covering for Alex Smith and Whittingham. The fact is I'm not. Alex Smith was never even accused of sexual assault, I believe you were thinking of Ratliff. However, since he was never convicted(I don't think it even went to trial) it is hardly fair to say that he did it. As for Whittingham, Monson's column on the matter never said that he 'called Unga to cuss him out' as YOU stated. Rather, Unga called him to say that he was de-committing and Kyle got upset. In fact the column went on to say that Kyle told him he was making a mistake in going to BYU, those don't really sound like cuss words to me. Speaking of sweeping things under the rug, why was it such a hush-hush secret when Manase Tonga's brother was kicked out of BYU after being found guilty of 4 counts of burglary? What was the punishment that Vic So'oto got for breaking and entering? Oh, that's right, he missed spring practice while the no-name reserve linebacker missed one whole game. Wow. My advice for you in the future would be to start researching what you are going to talk about so that you don't look like an idiot. Then again, you are a BYU fan so there is nothing you can do to keep from looking like an idiot.
