UCLA jumping into mix for Northridge safety Washington?
I had a nice visit last night with Chris Washington, the three-star (Scout.com) football safety from Northridge High in Layton who has offers from BYU, Utah and Utah State.
Here's the latest: Washington was going to commit to either Utah or BYU this week. He is not interested in Utah State. He wanted to commit before the Knights begin their season on Friday at Jordan.
However, he received a letter from UCLA coaches over the weekend, inviting him to the Bruins' Sept. 1 game (Labor Day) against Tennessee in the Rose Bowl. The letter did not include a scholarship offer, but Washington is going to try to make it to the game.
It could work out, because Northridge is scheduled to play in St. George, Utah, on Saturday, Aug. 30 against Crespi Carmelite High of Encino, Calif. Washington figures he can continue the drive down Interstate 15 to Los Angeles and catch the Bruins' opener.
"I will go and check them out and see what they are doing," he said. "I don't know if they will offer or not. I really can't say. I can't tell."
He said even if UCLA offers, he is not sure he will accept.
As for the BYU-Utah dilemma, he isn't sure right now what he will do.
I asked him the top reasons why he would choose either school.
For BYU, he said the coaching staff is the "main draw," and he really likes the place and the fact that the Cougars are ranked No. 16 in the nation right now by the Associated Press. The fact that one of his best friends, Northridge running back Peni Maka'afi, is headed to BYU is also a factor.
For Utah, he said he has grown up cheering for the Utes and their program and that he has several friends already on the Utah team. Also, his sister, Kelly Washington, earned an academic scholarship from the U. and will be a freshman there this coming school year.
"Man, I really like both places," he said.
He said BYU is recruiting him a bit harder right now, with more cards and letters from the coaches. Utah hasn't been as active.
"I know [Utah] wants me bad, though, so that's not a big deal," he said.

Dear Chris,
Actions speak louder than words. The BYU coaches want you more than the utah coaches, and so do BYU fans.
That's what sucks about BYU sending successful coaches all over the country - they come back and cherry-pick recruits.
BYU- It's "the right place", Chris.
Just remember that some people were raised LDS with both parents while other people were raised non-LDS without both parents. This is important, because if you do anything that is not considered "living right on and off the field," Elder Bronconi will be able to side-step your actions with that excuse, even if it turns out that you were raised by both parents. As BYU fans will tell you, you should never question what Elder Bronconi says, because he is the thirteenth apostle.
UCLA actually wants someone to watch the Tennessee game? That one will be ugly for the Bruins as they start a 3-9 season.
I'd always take going to school with family over an AP preseason ranking. His sister will be at the U for 4 years. That ranking will not be in Provo for that long. As for the coaches, I'd be really surprised if Jamie Hill is still in Provo next season. He's bound to get a head coaching gig soon.
Chris,
WE would love to have you at the U along with your sister. It is a great school and the coaches will make sure that you get a good education as well as play some great football. Their defensive reputation is superb. Good luck with your decision.
Go Utes
ylife is right, actions do speak louder than words. Right now, BYU's actions are saying they are in desperate need of athleticism in the secondary.
Washington has a decision to make. Does he want to play for a coach who has only put one DB in the NFL and even that guy was actually a LB(Urlacher)? Or, does he want to play for a coach that has put multiple DB's in the NFL over the last 15 years?
utethunder, you are so right!
Signed, Steve Tate
LOL, talent makes it to the NFL, period. That's why Kehl is doing so well in New York, and Washington might end up being to big and versatile to play safety anyways. No, he'll do just fine at BYU. He'll start early in his career, and that's why he'll choose BYU.
