One-time BYU recruit roughed up in Idaho prep game
We wrote quite a bit last spring and summer about Taysom Hill, the quarterback from Highland High in Pocatello, Idaho, who was heavily recruited by BYU.
Hill committed to Stanford, and will be signing with the Cardinal in February and then going on an LDS Church mission next summer.
Anyway, the prep All-America candidate was the victim of what seem to be dirty tactics during the annual "Black and Blue Bowl" between crosstown rivals Highland and Pocatello High.
Evidently, the Pocatello coach has been suspended for the actions. In the following video, Hill is kicking off, and, while totally defenseless is rocked by a Pocatello player.
During a subsequent kickoff, Highland has a player stay back to block for Hill. Apparently, the special teams coach who told the player to throw the block to protect Hill has been suspended, too.

Wow. That's a totally classless and illegal hit. I'm glad the coach from Pocatello got suspended.
It bothers me, however, that the Highland coach got in trouble for telling a guy to stay back and block. How is that wrong? You have to protect your man when it's clear that the other team is gunning for him.
I'm not so sure that the hit is 'illegal' but it is totally unnecessary and I would classify it as a dirty play.
The Highland coach being suspended is an absolute JOKE!
Amen. Nothing wrong with the block.
First of all the hit is illegal;
the opposing player is offsides when the ball is kicked, and secondly the hit on the kicker was illegal based on the following rule:
ART. 8 . . . A kicker is any player who legally punts, drop kicks or place kicks.
A player becomes a kicker when his knee, lower leg or foot makes contact with
the ball. He continues to be the kicker until he has had reasonable opportunity to
regain his balance or until after a free kick, he has advanced 5 yards beyond his
free-kick line or the kick has touched the ground or any other player.
and third a personal foul should/could have been called due to the intent of the hit.
It was a bush league play called for by a bush league coach.
