Football: Cal beats BYU for prized LDS linebacker Fanua
A linebacker from Milpitas High near San Jose, Calif., that BYU was recruiting heavily has orally committed to Cal.

Steven Fanua, a 6-foot-1, 210-pound senior, told the Bears he is headed their way after they beat Washington on Saturday, according to the San Jose Mercury News.

Fanua, who is LDS, is undecided on whether he will go on an LDS Church mission during his time with Cal. Along with BYU, Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, UNLV and Fresno State had offered scholarships to the hard-hitting linebacker.

Fanua had 131 tackles and four sacks his senior season.

The Cougars are still in the running for another prized LDS linebacker, Kyle Van Noy of McQueen High in Reno, Nev. Van Noy led his high school team to a 13-12 win in the Nevada state championship game on Saturday.

And Manti Teo. The question is, does losing Fuanu increase or decrease the chances for Teo and Van Noy or have no impact?

I would think it would help BYU land at least one of the other two in that the recruit might think he'll have more chances to see the field his first year.

Too bad about mission indecision. That usually means no. Shame for him to miss out on a great experience. But, if his beliefs are not there it is just as well.

This kid seemed to favor the Bears all the way along. BYU's chances were not that strong.

You know his coasches at cal will
advise him not to go on a mission.
They know BYU recruits missionaries
and trys to get them to change their commitment while on their missions

Gary,
You must have inside information on BYU because they have stated they DONT recruit missionaries!!! Even Riley Nelson and other players that changed to BYU while on missions have said BYU never recruited them and it was their own choice!!! what are you smoking?
