Football: BYU signee Richard Wilson makes finalist list for national award
Spanish Fork tight end Richard Wilson, who signed to play football for BYU a few weeks ago, was a finalist for the 19th Annual Franklin D. Watkins memorial trophy.
The award is presented each year to the nation's top African-American male high school scholar-athlete.
The final honor went to Jamal Patterson, a wide receiver from Henry County High in Georgia who has signed to play football for Stanford.
Other finalists were Christopher Burnette of LaGrange, Ga., who has signed with Georgia; Jelani Jenkins of Silver Spring, Md., who has signed with Florida and Jemari Robergs of Long Beach, Calif., who has signed with Stanford.
Wilson caught 25 passes for 510 yards and six touchdowns for the Dons in 2008. He also had 20 tackles and three sacks on defense.
The Watkins Award, selected by the National Alliance of African-American Athletes, honors founder Franklin D. Watkins, a coach and mentor in Harrisburg, Pa., with a unique gift for communicating and relating to African-American youth.
