Football: One-time BYU QB recruit still unsigned
At about this time last year, I wrote about Jordan High receiver Cody Raymond, and how we thought Division I football programs across the state missed out on the three-time all-stater.
The most prolific receiver in Utah schoolboy football history, Raymond ended up signing with Snow College.
If Gary Andersen had gotten the head job at Utah State a year earlier, I am betting he wouldn't have passed on a kid like Raymond.
Anyway, this year's Raymond, in my opinion, was Bingham receiver Michael Edmunds, who had some offers from Division I-AA schools, but decided to accept preferred walk-on status from BYU.
Out of state, there's a quarterback from Gilroy, Calif., by the name of Jamie Jensen whom I have sort of followed this past season, and I am stunned he didn't have any Division I offers either.
Jensen, who drew some interest from BYU (but no offer), is a 6-foot-3, 210-pounder who threw for more than 7,000 yards in two years. A friend in the Bay Area whose opinion I trust has seen Jensen play four or five times, and says he is the real deal.
"I'm just kind of waiting it out right now, just hoping that something happens, but if it doesn't I'll just go the JC route," Jensen told Scout.com recently. "San Jose State has been talking to us. My dad is staying in touch with a lot of schools. We're still talking with New Mexico, San Jose State, San Diego State a little bit and Washington. That's about it. I'm just keeping open options until August."
It's not an academic issue, either, that is keeping schools away. Jensen is a full qualifier and has cleared the NCAA Clearinghouse, according to Scout.com.
