Baseball: San Diego-bound Littlewood of Pine View is Gatorade POY
Marcus Littlewood, a junior at Pine View High in St. George, is the 2009 Utah Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year, the sports drink maker announced Thursday.

Littlewood is the son of Dixie State baseball coach Mike Littlewood, a former BYU standout.

Marcus Littlewood is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year award to be announced in June.

The 6-foot-4, 200-pound shortstop and right-handed pitcher led the Panthers to a 14-8 record and a berth in the Class 4A state postseason tournament, where they fell to Payson High.

Littlewood batted .531 with five home runs, 22 RBIs and a 1.047 slugging percentage this spring. On the mound, he posted a 2-1 record with a 1.53 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 17.2 innings pitched.

Littlewood has maintained a 3.6 GPA in the classroom. "Littlewood is as good as advertised," said Dixie High Head Coach Jeff Messerly. "He's the one kid you don't want to beat you. He's just getting bigger and stronger and he hits from both sides of the plate. There's nobody that's in his class."

Littlewood has orally committed to play baseball for the University of San Diego.

He was also the state winner in 2008. The 2006 and 2007 winner was Cottonwood's Tanner Robles.
