Football: Former Alta QB signs with Middle Tennessee State
Remember Ryan Rosenvall, the all-state quarterback who helped lead Alta to the 5A state football championship in 2007?

Rosenvall wanted to play close to home, but Utah wasn't interested in him and BYU wanted him to walk on.

So Rosenvall took his act to West Los Angeles Junior College, where he was recently named first-team All-Pacific Conference in 2008.

Rosenvall has signed with Middle Tennessee State and will play this fall under offensive coordinator Tony Franklin, a spread offense guru. Franklin apparently say Rosenvall's highlight film and thought he would be a good fit.

Rosenvall flew to Murfreesboro, Tenn., last week and signed while he was there.

Coming out of Alta, Rosenvall was offered by Wyoming late, but the offer was later rescinded. Kansas State also showed some interest.

Basketball: High-scoring Texan commits to Utah State
Utah State's men's basketball program has received an oral commitment from Preston Medlin, a senior at Hebron High School in Carrollton, Texas.

A 6-foot-5 shooting guard, Medlin averaged 22.5 points per game in the regular season. He committed to USU coach Stew Morrill on Thursday afternoon, just a few days after his team was eliminated from the 5A Region I bi-district playoff.

Medlin is expected to sign with the Aggies on April 15 when the regular signing period begins. Most high school seniors signed last November during the early signing period.

"It's a good program, and I like the coach a lot," Medlin said.

Coincidentally, Medlin was second in scoring in the area to Marshall Henderson of L.D. Bell High School. Henderson has signed with Utah.

Medlin made 65 three-pointers his senior season. He had 34 points in Hebron's loss to Bell on Tuesday.

Medlin also had offers from Centenary, Houston, Stephen F. Austin and Western Kentucky.

Football: BYU signee Richard Wilson makes finalist list for national award
Spanish Fork tight end Richard Wilson, who signed to play football for BYU a few weeks ago, was a finalist for the 19th Annual Franklin D. Watkins memorial trophy.

The award is presented each year to the nation's top African-American male high school scholar-athlete.

The final honor went to Jamal Patterson, a wide receiver from Henry County High in Georgia who has signed to play football for Stanford.

Other finalists were Christopher Burnette of LaGrange, Ga., who has signed with Georgia; Jelani Jenkins of Silver Spring, Md., who has signed with Florida and Jemari Robergs of Long Beach, Calif., who has signed with Stanford.

Wilson caught 25 passes for 510 yards and six touchdowns for the Dons in 2008. He also had 20 tackles and three sacks on defense.

The Watkins Award, selected by the National Alliance of African-American Athletes, honors founder Franklin D. Watkins, a coach and mentor in Harrisburg, Pa., with a unique gift for communicating and relating to African-American youth.

Football: Alta OL commits to BYU
Alta High's Jordan Black, a 6-foot-7, 235-pound offensive lineman, has committed to BYU, the junior confirmed Wednesday evening.

"It was a shock when they offered me," Black said. "But I have always dreamed of playing football there, so I said yes."

Black attended BYU's Junior Day a few weeks ago, then traveled to Provo on Monday, along with his parents, to meet BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall. He received the offer in Mendenhall's office, and quickly accepted.

"I told him I would love to go there," Brown said.

Black said BYU was the first school to offer him a scholarship, and he is not sure if any other schools were interested in him.

He started every game at left tackle last fall for Alta's 5A state championship team, and was an All-Region 2 selection.

He also plays on the school's basketball team.

Black said he is undecided on whether he will go on an LDS Church mission before enrolling at BYU.

The Cougars also have their eyes on another Alta junior, linebacker Toloa'i Ho Ching, but have yet to offer the all-stater.

------------------------

Black's commitment means that the Cougars now have commitments from four members of the Class of 2010, all from the state of Utah.

Timpview defensive lineman Bronson Kaufusi, Skyline running back Algernon Brown and Pleasant Grove linebacker Joey Owens have said they will sign with BYU next February.

The Cougars have made scholarship offers to at least two other instate players who are currently juniors: Pleasant Grove defensive end Sefa Tanoa'i and Timpview safety Chris Badger.

Football: BYU interested in junior RB from Alabama
Late in the recruiting process for 2009 signees, BYU started to look closely at a few high school football players from the South, but didn't actually get any to prospects to take a visit to Provo.

Looks like the Cougars are starting a bit earlier in this go-round.

Drew Phillips, a 6-foot, 180-pound running back from Boaz, Alabama, is emerging as one of the Cougars' top targets from the class of 2010, it appears.

Phillips rushed for 2,196 yards and 18 touchdowns on 317 attempts his junior season and has shattered most of the rushing records at his high school with a year to play.

"I have been hearing from BYU the most," Phillips told scoutsouth.com. "They have called my coach eight times in the past two weeks. BYU wants me to call them so they can speak with me. They are recruiting me the hardest at the moment."

The prospect said BYU and Lousiana Tech are recruiting him the hardest, but he is also drawing interest from Alabama, Ole Miss, Mississippi and Kentucky, among others.

Basketball: Utah State in running for 6-4 shooting guard from Florida
Utah State is still in the running for a 6-foot-4 senior guard from Florida, according to the St. Petersburg Times newspaper.

Chris Perez of Olsdmar Christian High School in the Tampa, Fla., area, visited Utah State last weekend and has received a scholarship offer from the Aggies. He watched USU beat Call State Bakersfield and was reportedly impressed by the crowd turnout.

Most recently, Perez worked out in front of coaches from Duquesne. His team's season has ended.

According to the Times, James Madison, Jacksonville State, Tennessee Tech, Ole Miss, Stetson and Delaware have offered Perez.

Basketball: Coaches flocking to Provo to see junior Collinsworth
It will take quite an effort from a Utah boys basketball team to knock off powerful Provo this season.

Why? Because the Bulldogs not only have one of the top seniors in the state -- BYU-bound Brandon Davies -- but they also have easily the top junior in the state: 6-5 guard Kyle Collinsworth.

In the last few games, coaches from Stanford, Washington State, Utah and BYU have been in Provo to watch Collinsworth. All four schools have offered.

Friday night, Davies had 18 points and Collinsworth added 13 as the Bulldogs rolled past Springville.

Football: Where Snow College's top players are heading
Snow College has become a go-to place for Division I college football recruiters the past several years, with the junior college Badgers annually sending a dozen or so players on to four-year schools.

Although coach Steve Coburn had a team that played in the juco national championship game last December, Snow had a below average year when it came time to producing guys who are moving on to four-year programs.

That is because Snow is usually a factory for offensive and defensive linemen, and last year most of the starting linemen were freshmen. Coburn says that "on paper" next year's team could be better than the 2007 and 2008 teams that played for national titles.

Here's a rundown on the members of the 2008 Snow team that are moving on to bigger programs:

* Tight end Peter Tuipuloto (Mountain View) committed to Washington State, but has decided to go on an LDS Church mission instead.

* Quarterback Jon Eastman (Hillcrest) signed with Colorado State.

* Defensive end James Aiono (Murray) signed with Utah.

* Twin brothers Travis and Trent Barney (Orem) signed with Southern Utah. The Barney's older brother played for BYU.

* Defensive back Jordan Brown (Box Elder) signed with Weber State.

* Offensive lineman Parker Erickson (Alta), defensive back Joey Schrader (Riverton) and defensive lineman Nick Zundel (Bear River) turned down some D-I offers to walk on at Utah State.

* Defensive end Mike Laloni (Hunter), linebacker Isi Filimoeatu (Hunter) and kicker Joe Phillips (Lone Peak) will walk on at Utah.

Basketball: A look at the up-and-comers (even eighth-graders)
We wrote a few days ago about some of the seniors from around the state who might be able to hook up this spring with a Division I college basketball program.

Today we turn our attention to some of the up-and-coming basketball stars the state of Utah has to offer.

From the class of 2010 (this year's juniors), the top prospects are Provo's 6-5 Kyle Collinsworth and Bingham's 6-8 Ben Clifford. Neal Monson, a 6-10 center from Waterford (a private school in Sandy that plays at the 3A level) is also drawing some rapidly growing interest. Monson's father, Reid, who is also his coach, played college basketball for Utah.

The Class of 2011 (this year's sophomores) has three players (so far) who have emerged as possible mid to high Division-I level recruits. Those would be Brighton's Corbin Miller, Box Elder's Brant Mecham and West's Tyrell Corbin.

Miller has a stress fracture and has missed most of the regular season, but may return in time for the state playoffs. Mecham plays for his father, Keith, at Box Elder and is a deadly outside shooter. Ty Corbin is the son of Utah Jazz assistant coach with the same name.

A good source tells me that the class of 2012 (this year's ninth-graders) does not have any surefire candidates at this point.

It is extremely early to be talking about such a thing, but already some talented eighth-graders are emerging as potential stars. They would comprise the class of 2013.

Among those up-and-comers are Nick Emery (brother of BYU shooting guard Jackson Emery), Brandon Miller (brother of the aforementioned Corbin Miller) and Jordan Darger (brother of UNLV sharpshooter Joe Darger, the former Riverton standout).

All three of those guys could potentially start for their high school teams as ninth-graders next year, sources say. Emery is ticketed to Lone Peak and Miller to Brighton. The 6-foot-4 Darger's high school choice is reportedly unclear.

Football: Snow signs 21, including 18 Utahns
BYU didn't land a highly sought after football player from Hawaii's Punahou School, but Snow College in Ephraim did.

The Badgers, who played in the junior college national championship game last fall at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, have signed 21 players, coach Steve Coburn said Tuesday.

Among the 21 is Trevor Iosefa, a defensive lineman from Punahou who was teammates with Manti Te'o, the five-star linebacker who was heavily recruited by BYU but signed with Notre Dame.

Eighteen of Snow's signees are from Utah, while one is from Florida and the other is from Pennsylvania.

The Badgers recruited just one quarterback, Alta's Ammon Olsen, but he signed with Southern Utah.

Coburn said the program doesn't have a big need for a QB because former Timpview star Quin Mecham is expected to return for his sophomore season. Behind him, there is a logjam of QBs, some of whom have recently returned from church missions, vying to be the backup.

Of course, Snow's primary QB last fall, former Hillcrest star Jon Eastman, has signed with Colorado State. We will have more on where other former Snow standouts are heading in a later post.

Coburn said that in past years the Badgers have gone after more players who had Division I offers but failed to qualify academically. This year, he recruited more guys who were qualifiers, but didn't have many D-I offers.

Of course, there are exceptions. With no other football-playing junior colleges in the state, Snow coaches increasingly find themselves recruiting against Southern Utah, Weber State and Dixie State.

Some of the signees that Coburn is especially excited about are Layton running back LaVaughn Jackson, Manti linebacker Griffen Aste and Manti receiver Nick Brown.

Highland linebacker Muli Kinikini is one of the players that drew some D-I interest and offers, but signed with Snow just in case he doesn't qualify.

Here's the list of Snow signees:

NAME POSITION HIGH SCHOOL HOMETOWN
Austin Jones DB Orem HS (Orem, Utah)
Kimball Jensen DB Layton HS (Layton, Utah)
Junior Cole DB Northridge HS (West Point, Utah)
Trey Phillips DB Alta HS (Draper, Utah)

Shawn Smith DB Hialeah HS (Hialeah, Florida)

Basketball: Who's left among Utah's best seniors?
Someone asked me the other day if there are any seniors left in the state who could sign with a Division I basketball school this spring.

Of course, during the early signing period in November, BYU landed four instate recruits: Lone Peak's Tyler Haws, Provo's Brandon Davies, Orem's Ian Harward and Lone Peak's Nate Austin.

Pleasant Grove's C.J. Wilcox signed with Washington, West Jordan's Reyes Gallegos signed with Nebraska and West Jordan's Mason Sawyer signed with Boise State.

Judge Memorial's Stallon Saldivar signed with Northern Arizona.

So who is left?

Judge guard Dee Crandall, 6-1, is drawing some interest from Weber State.

Joel Einfeldt, Cedar City's point guard, has been hearing a bit from Air Force.

Utah Valley keeps its recruiting efforts as non-public as any school out there, but is said to have interest in Bear River's 6-5 Wade Bronson, Olympus' Corbin Green (brother of Utah forward Shaun Green) and Kyle Maughan, a 6-4 wing player from Hillcrest.

Bountiful has a couple strong seniors who have helped the Braves to their outstanding season to date. Sean Carey, a 6-7 forward, is drawing some out-of-state interest; Travis Parrish, the athletic 6-4 wing player, signed a football scholarship with Utah State.

Perhaps the best remaining unsigned senior, according to one source, is Pleasant Grove guard LeSean Wilcox (cousin of Washington-bound C.J. Wilcox).

Tyler Stahle of Woods Cross also continues to see some recruiting attention.

Basketball: Offer extended, but has it been received?
We were assured last week by someone close to the BYU basketball coaching staff that they have extended a scholarship offer to DeMarcus Harrison, a 6-foot-4, 185-pound shooting guard from Greenwood, South Carolina.

Harrison is a junior who averages close to 25 points a game.

Apparently, though, Harrison has not received the message from the Cougars.

He told the Web site SCprepnation.com, which covers South Carolina high school basketball, that he just received his first offer over the weekend. He said it came from the College of Charleston and former Georgia Tech coach Bobby Cremins.

Harrison told us last month that he has "high interest" in BYU because he is LDS. BYU coaches have been to South Carolina several times this season to watch him play.

Football: One-time BYU QB recruit still unsigned
At about this time last year, I wrote about Jordan High receiver Cody Raymond, and how we thought Division I football programs across the state missed out on the three-time all-stater.

The most prolific receiver in Utah schoolboy football history, Raymond ended up signing with Snow College.

If Gary Andersen had gotten the head job at Utah State a year earlier, I am betting he wouldn't have passed on a kid like Raymond.

Anyway, this year's Raymond, in my opinion, was Bingham receiver Michael Edmunds, who had some offers from Division I-AA schools, but decided to accept preferred walk-on status from BYU.

Out of state, there's a quarterback from Gilroy, Calif., by the name of Jamie Jensen whom I have sort of followed this past season, and I am stunned he didn't have any Division I offers either.

Jensen, who drew some interest from BYU (but no offer), is a 6-foot-3, 210-pounder who threw for more than 7,000 yards in two years. A friend in the Bay Area whose opinion I trust has seen Jensen play four or five times, and says he is the real deal.

"I'm just kind of waiting it out right now, just hoping that something happens, but if it doesn't I'll just go the JC route," Jensen told Scout.com recently. "San Jose State has been talking to us. My dad is staying in touch with a lot of schools. We're still talking with New Mexico, San Jose State, San Diego State a little bit and Washington. That's about it. I'm just keeping open options until August."

It's not an academic issue, either, that is keeping schools away. Jensen is a full qualifier and has cleared the NCAA Clearinghouse, according to Scout.com.

Boys soccer: Two Utahns sign with Oregon State
A couple of Utah's top high school boys soccer stars have signed to play for Oregon State.

Beavers coach Dana Taylor announced that Bountiful High's Mike Hogden and Park City High's Tommy Martin have signed with Oregon State.

Hodgen, a 6-2, 185-pound midfielder, helped the Braves win state championships in 2007 and 2008 and was a first-team all-stater.

Martin, a 6-3, 190-pound midfielder, was first-team all-state as a junior and a member of two state championship teams at Park City.
Girls soccer: Six Utahns sign with New Mexico Highlands
New Mexico Highlands University, an NCAA Division II school in Las Vegas, N.M., might have to change its nickname from the Cowboys to the Utahns if new coach Justin Wagar keeps this up.
Wagar, who was a Utah Valley University assistant before taking a job as the head women’s soccer coach at BYU-Hawaii, has signed six Utahns to national letters of intent for women’s soccer.
Here are the Utahns that the Cowboys recently signed:
* East High center-midfielder Sussannah Hertz
* West Jordan goalkeeper Lauren Waite
* Salem Hills’ striker Storie Brockbank
* Bingham midfielder Jessica Henninger (a transfer from Southern Utah)
* Davis goalkeeper Scottie Prince (a transfer from BYU-Hawaii)
* Alta midfielder Stephanie Devisser (returning to competitive soccer after attending BYU-Idaho)

Girls Basketball: Rich's Eastman commits to Westminster
One of the state's smallest high schools will be represented on a college basketball team next year.

Allie Eastman, a guard at Rich High School in Randolph, Utah, has committed to Westminster College.

The 5-foot-10 Eastman played the past three years for the Salt Lake Metro club team and is ranked as one of the top guards in the state by the Intermountain Hoops Scouting Service.

Eastman currently averages 17.2 points per game and leads the state three-pointers per game, 3.1.

She has made 167 three-pointers in her career, second-most in state girls basketball history.

Eastman will join former Salt Lake Metro players Keisha Catten, McKenzie Jessop, Michelle Pace, Lexi Phillips and Candice Smith as teammates at Westminster College. Eastman is the third Salt Lake Metro player (2009) to receive a college scholarship.

Utes get a kicker/punter
The Utes have taken the unusual step of signing a kicker. Normally kickers often start as walk-ons, even the great King Louie started as a walk-on. However, more and more schools are making kickers a greater priority. The Utes apparently feel that way, giving a scholarship to Petaluma, Calif., kicker/punter Nick Marsh, who won a national punting competition in Las Vegas recently.
Like Sakoda, Marsh spent a lot of time working with former UCLA great Chris Sailer.
He'll be in the mix with Ben Vroman, who will be a senior in 2009 and Sean Sellwood, a Judge high grad who spent the last season learning from Sakoda.

Football: Lone Peak stars will walk on at BYU, Utah
Now that they've signed most of their football recruits from the class of 2009, many schools in the area are starting to offer "preferred walk-on" status to several players who did not sign.

For instance, Lone Peak linebacker Zane Mendenhall -- nephew of coach Bronco Mendenhall -- has accepted a preferred walk-on offer from BYU.

Zane, a second-team all-stater, is currently ranked No. 1 in the state at 171 pounds in Class 5A wrestling.

Mendenhall's teammate at Lone Peak, running back and defensive back Quade Chappuis, has accepted preferred walk-on status at Utah, along with Tyson Buck, a former Lone Peak linebacker. Tyson Buck is the son of former BYU lineman Jason Buck.

Another Lone Peak standout, receiver/defensive back Chandler Allphin, signed a letter of intent to play for Southern Utah University last week.

Chappuis ran for 611 yards and averaged 5.9 yards per carry last season. He also had 117 receiving yards and scored seven touchdowns. He led the team with five interceptions.

Football: More Bingham signings to report
Couple more signings to report from Bingham High's football program.

In addition to tight end Remington Peck signing with BYU and linebacker L.T. Filiaga signing with Utah, the Miners will send players to Dixie State College and Idaho State.

Bingham quarterback Jake Soffe has signed with Dixie State and lineman Talai Livai signed with Idaho State.

Also, receiver Michael Edmunds has accepted an offer to be a preferred walk-on at BYU.

In case you are checking here for recruiting news and not the different college blogs, check out our BYU blog for information about Kyle Van Noy, the receiver and linebacker from Reno, Nev., who won't be joining the Cougars until January of 2010.
Scout.com's take on BYU, Utah
Sharing an assessment from Brandon Huffman, the regional recruiting manager for Scout.com on Utah and BYU's classes. Scout.com has BYU currently at No. 40, Utah at No. 54, a notch ahead of MWC rival TCU.

On BYU's class:
(BYU might drop down some in Scout's ranking since Kyle Van Noy won't join the team until Jan. 2010.)

"Van Noy is a phenomenal player, he is the best football player on the west coast," Huffman said. "I know people think they didn't get some great guys they were going after like Te'o but BYU did a good job getting on some players early."

On Utah's class:
"Utah signed a pretty good class. The biggest question I get is if the win over Alabama is going to be noticeable and usually the bumps are seen the next year. They still got a darn good class coming in with guys like Jordan Wynn and James Aiono."

He was surprised that Timpview's Xavier Su'a-Filo went with the UCLA Bruins over the Utes:
"But just the fact that Utah and BYU were in the mix with those other schools tells me how respected those programs are becoming," he said. "That they are mentioned in the final five and final three for players like that speaks to the programs' respect."
Judge soccer star signs
We get so busy with football signing day we forget this is signing day for some other sports too. Judge Memorial's soccer player Morgan Rockwell signed with Louisiana Tech. You can read about it here.
Su'a-Filo makes his decision
Timpview's Su'a-Filo, one of the most sought after recruits in the state, announced he is going to attend UCLA today on ESPNU.
The Bruins beat out Utah and USC, LSU and BYU for the lineman.
Su'a-Filo said on the network his decision came down to his belief that the Bruins were "on the rise."
Football: Riley Nelson will sign with BYU in March, his father says
BYU has released the names of 21 recruits who have signed national letters of intent today, and quarterback Riley Nelson's name is not on the list.
Nelson, the Logan High product who played his freshman year at Utah State, is currently on an LDS Church mission in Spain.
His father, Keith Nelson, just told me that Riley will sign his letter some time in March when he returns home from his mission. Keith Nelson said Riley has about five weeks left.
"A far as we're concerned, there are no changes," Keith Nelson said. "He's still going to BYU....We feel like there is no worry, no rush."

Where are you going Xavier?
The situation with Xavier Su'a-Filo is getting interesting. His coach hasn't spoken to him, but we do know ESPN is hoping and setting up for a noon broadcast. Sources also say that neither the Utah coaches nor the UCLA coaches have heard from him today. Does that mean he's headed to USC?
Who knows. I do know there are a lot of schools eager for him to make his announcement and end the drama.
So far the biggest surprise has to be that Manti Te'o, highly sought after by USC and BYU, among others, signed with Notre Dame.
Judge player signs
Judge Memorial's Will Katoa signed his letter of intent today, you can read about it here.
Cal listing signees
Cal has its Utah connections listed on its website with Iso Sofele and Keni Kaufusi, both out of Cottonwood, faxing their letters to the school. Kaufusi, you may remember, was the recruit Utah offered then dropped after he ran into some legal issues. He plead guilty to four misdemeanors following an attack at a drive-through window. Utah didn't want to take a chance on him but obviously Cal does, hopefully he can find success with the Bears.
Class coming together
Utah's signing class is coming together quickly this morning. We should have an update posted any minute now. I just spoke to Timpview coach Louie Wong. He said he hasn't heard anything from Xavier Su'a-Filo, but ESPN is planning a noon broadcast from the school which means that Xavier has possibly made a decision and won't delay. Word out of LA is the Bruins got him.

Football: Davis' Cowser, Grantsville's Gumucio commit to Southern Utah
Southern Utah University in Cedar City has landed two more outstanding Utah high school football players.

Grantsville linebacker Austin Gumucio and Davis High lineman James Cowser both recently committed to play for the T-birds and second-year coach Ed Lamb.

* Cowser, a 6-foot-3, 230-pound senior, plays defensive end, defensive tackle and offensive guard for the Darts and will likely play DE for the Thunderbirds.

He made 94 tackles, including 15 sacks, his senior year and also had 14 knockdowns and a forced fumble.

Cowser was a consensus first-team all-stater and the Region 1 co-defensive player of the year. He was the Wendy's High School Heisman award winner for his school.

The son of Steve and Kelly Cowser had scholarship offers from Air Force, Weber State and Snow College in addition to SUU. He had preferred walk-on offers from Utah, BYU and UNLV.

Steve Cowser said that James utlimately decided that SUU was the right fit for him after he visited the campus last week. He felt a connection to the coaching staff and is excited about where the program is heading.

Cowser will go on an LDS Church mission after playing one year in Cedar City.

* Gumucio, a 6-4, 200-pound senior, plays linebacker and fullback for Grantsville.

According to Grantsville coach Tony Cloward, Gumucio "really hit it off with SUU's coaches" especially linebackers coach Justin Ena. He committed to SUU on Sunday.

Gumucio was a first-team all-region and all-state linebacker and led Class 3A in tackles. He was third in the state in tackles with 157 in 11 games.

Gumucio also averaged 5.5 yards per carry rushing the ball and was the team's MVP. He also plays forward and center for Grantsville's basketball team.
Graham sticks with UCLA
Keenan Graham, a defensive end out of Las Vegas, has confirmed his plans to sign with UCLA according to the Las Vegas Sun. Graham committed to UCLA in November but entertained thoughts of going to Utah. However, he called Utah's coaches and broke the news to them Monday night that he was sticking with the Bruins.
His decision leaves the Utes' last recruiting push to be for Timpview's Xavier Su'a-Filo. The 6-foot-5, 285-pound offensive guard is considering the Utes along with LSU, BYU, UCLA and USC.
He may not make his decision on ESPNU Wednesday as planned and may wait and see if his coach, Louie Wong, gets the job as Utah's next offensive line coach.
Both Wong and ESPN's Tom Luginbill, the National Director of Recruiting for ESPN Scouts Inc., said they've heard Su'a-Filo may wait a few days to make his decision.

Football: Three Alta stars commit to Southern Utah University
Three football players from Alta High's 2008 5A state football championship team have committed to play for Southern Utah University next fall.

Quarterback Ammon Olsen, tight end Drake Eckholdt and defensive lineman Brady Davies committed to SUU coach Ed Lamb over the weekend, according to Alta coach Les Hamilton.

Olsen, a 6-foot-4, 195-pound senior, threw for 3,209 yards and 36 touchdowns last fall.

Davies, a 6-4, 230-pound senior, had 68 tackles, including five sacks.

Eckholdt is a 6-4, 205-pound senior who caught the game-winning touchdown pass against Davis in the state quarterfinals.

Football: Texas RB de-commits from Aggies, pledges to OSU
A highly touted running back from Texas has spurned the Utah State Aggies after orally committing to new coach Gary Andersen a few weeks ago.

According to various internet recruiting Web sites, Ashton Jefferson of Alvin, Texas, committed to Oregon State on Sunday night.

Jefferson, a 6-foot-2, 195-pounder who rushed for 1,518 yards and 14 touchdowns as a senior, apparently pledged to the Beavers without having visited the campus in Corvallis, Ore.

Sources told the Web sites that Jefferson will sign with Oregon State on Wednesday, which comes as a big blow to Utah State. The Aggies figured they had found a hidden gem when they landed Jefferson, MVP of his district in Texas after the 2008 season.

Jefferson didn't start until his senior year, then posted the second-most rushing yards in his school's history.

Weber State has picked up a few more commitments recently from some instate stars.

Bountiful High's Darren Denucci, a 6-foot-5, 270-pound offensive lineman, committed to coach Ron McBride's program earlier this week.

And this weekend, Park City High's Tony Epperson said he will sign with the Wildcats on Wedesday as well.

Epperson will play safety for the Wildcats, although he was also an excellent receiver.
Football: Weber State will sign six prep players from Oklahoma
Weber State's football team is going to have a definite Oklahoma flair to it in the coming years.

At least six high school players from Oklahoma will sign with the Wildcats on Wednesday, according to a report in the Oklahoman newspaper recently.

Kamaal Ahmad, a Weber State assistant who grew up in Edmond, Okla., and played at Northeastern Oklahoma is the apparent tie to the Sooner state.

The six players who have committed to Weber State include Anthony Morales of Edmond Memorial, Josh Booker of Putnam North, Robbie Diamond of Putnam City, Trevor Pletcher of Edmond Santa Fe, Cameron Sanders of Millwood and Willie Okwuonu of Edmond Santa Fe.

------------------

Timpview's Xavier Su'a-Filo and Manti Te'o of Punahou High in Hawaii are among the uncommitted high school players who will make their announcements on signing day on ESPN, according to a news release from the network.

Programming will begin at 8 a.m. MT and run through 5 p.m. and several players from ESPNU's Top 150 are expected to announce their decisions live, including Te'o and Su'a-Filo.

Utah coach Kyle Whiittingham will make a guest appearance (along with several other coaches), which is one of the reasons why many recruiting experts believe Su'a-Filo is headed to Utah.
