Marcus Littlewood, a junior at Pine View High in St. George, is the 2009 Utah Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year, the sports drink maker announced Thursday.

Marcus Littlewood is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year award to be announced in June.

The 6-foot-4, 200-pound shortstop and right-handed pitcher led the Panthers to a 14-8 record and a berth in the Class 4A state postseason tournament, where they fell to Payson High.

Football: Wyoming throws (cowboy) hat into the ring for Brighton DT
Another school has jumped into the sweepstakes for Brighton High defensive tackle Ricky Heimuli. That's No. 21, if you are scoring at home.

According to Ricky's brother, Sefo Heimuli, Wyoming just became the third Mountain West Conference school to offer a scholarship to the four-star recruit, joining BYU and Utah.

"Wyoming went to Brighton HS today and offered Ricky on the spot," Heimuli wrote. "Ricky was really excited and spoke with the coach for little bit and was impressed and Ricky thought the coach was really cool."
Baseball: Where top Utah seniors are headed
This is a big week for high school baseball in Utah, with the 5A state tournament going on at Utah Valley University's Brent Brown Ballpark and the 4A state tournament going on at Kearns High.

Last week, Juan Diego won the 3A state tournament at UVU, downing Judge Memorial in the championship game.

Scouts say this is a rather deep class of talent (2009), but lacks superstars who could go high in June's Major League Baseball Draft.

That could happen next year, as the class of 2010 includes Pine View's Marcus Littlewood, Lone Peak's Dillon Robinson, Cedar City's Kai Eldredge and Spanish Fork's Adam Duke.

But first things first. Here's a list of where many of the state's top seniors will be playing next year:

Zach Adams, Cottonwood, pitcher: Utah

Brock Duke, Spanish Fork, pitcher: Utah

Kendall Mayer, Cottonwood, pitcher: Washington State

AJ Carman, Judge Memorial, pitcher: Washington State

Keenyn Walker, Judge Memorial, outfielder: Central Arizona

Court Zollinger, Judge Memorial, infielder: Utah Valley University

Mike Dedrick, Canyon View, pitcher: Univ. of San Diego

Blake Krahenbuhl, Bingham, pitcher: Utah Valley University

Colton Yack, Bingham, infielder: Dixie State

Rhett Nelson, Timpanogos, pitcher: Santa Clara

Kyle Bilbry, Viewmont, pitcher: Salt Lake Community College

Josh Mooney, American Fork, pitcher: SLCC

Chunner Nyberg, Dixie, pitcher: BYU

Bo Fisher, American Fork, catcher: SLCC

Taylor Jones, Cyprus, pitcher: College of Southern Nevada

Justin Campbell, Alta, pitcher: Utah Valley

Vince Giron, Bingham, infielder: College of Southern Idaho

This is obviously an incomplete list. If you know of any others, send an email to drew@sltrib.com and we will list them here in future posts.

Basketball: Provo's Collinsworth bracing for deluge of recruiting calls
In May, college basketball coaches can call high school juniors once a month. In June, they can call once a week, which is why Provo High's 6-foot-5 superstar Kyle Collinsworth is bracing for a deluge.

Collinsworth is by far the most-recruited player in the state's class of 2010 crop.

His brother, Chris, played his freshman year at BYU before leaving on a church mission to Australia. Chris will return to BYU in time for the 2010-2011 season.

As for Kyle, speculation is running rampant as to which school he will choose. One thing is certain: he will have a lot of options, and BYU isn't necessarily the leader for his services just because his brother is a Cougar.

Kyle was highly recruited before he helped his Utah Pump N Run club basketball team make it to the championshp game of a tournament in Las Vegas in late April, but since then interest in him is off the charts.

Several recruiting Web sites have said he was the top player at the tournament.

ESPN's Scouts, Inc., service gave him a 92 rating, saying that prospects rated between 90-100 are "immediate impact prospects" who have the "potential to start as a freshman for a national, top-25 program."

A source with knowledge of his recruitment said big-name programs such as UCLA, Kansas and Oklahoma State have jumped into the picture. Those schools, along with UNLV and Arizona State, are trying to get Collinsworth to attend their elite camps so they can evaluate him on their own campuses.

Last year, Lone Peak's Tyler Haws, Provo's Brandon Davies and Pleasant Grove's C.J. Wilcox drew a lot of national interest and recruitment, but it appears that Collinsworth's offers will surpass theirs.

Recently, Collinsworth was invited (and accepted) to attend the NBA Players Association Top 100 camp in June in Virginia. Many call it the top-rated camp for elite prospects in the country.

Scout.com has Collinsworth as the 71st best player in the country, and 16th best at his position.

So far, Stanford, Virginia, UNLV, BYU, Utah, Utah State and Washington State have offered. Arizona State will likely be the next to offer.

All those schools visited during the recently concluded spring visiting period, along with USC.

When former Washington State coach Tony Bennett took the job at Virginia, one of his first offers went to Collinsworth, whom he had recruited heavily when he was in Pullman.

Collinsworth said he would like to have a decision made by early September.

He averaged 18.4 points, 5.6 rebounds and 6.7 assists per game for Provo last season and was the Tribune's 4A MVP.

Football: Tennessee offers Brighton's Heimuli
Another SEC football program has offered Brighton High defensive tackle Ricky Heimuli.

Just got word that over the weekend the University of Tennessee offered the junior standout.

It is Heimuli's 20th offer.

"Ricky spoke with coach [Jim] Chaney over the phone and Ricky really liked what they have to offer so he's really excited to build that relationship," noted his brother, Sefo.

--------------------

University of Utah women's basketball coach Elaine Elliott has offered a high school freshman for the first time in her tenure at the U.

Brittney Martin, a freshman at Syracuse High in north Davis County, received the scholarship offer from the Utes after she made an unofficial recruiting visit to Utah with here parents last week.

Last year, Martin averaged 12.7 points, 10.5 rebounds, 2.04 assists, 3.5 steals and 2.2 blocks for the Spartans.

Evans, a 5-8 setter from Sandy, will join the Griffins after leading Juan Diego Catholic High School to the best season in school history as a senior. She was named First Team All-State by The Salt Lake Tribune.

Marchant, a 5-9 outside hitter from Sandy, was the top hitter for Alta High last year. She finished her senior season with 294 kills, 245 digs and 58 service aces. She was an honorable mention all-state selection.

Jones is a 6-0 outside hitter from Issaquah, Wash.

Girls Basketball: Springville's Kroneberger signs with UNLV
Riverton's Joe Darger found success playing basketball for UNLV, and now Springville's Ashley Kroneberger will give it a try.

Kroneberger, the Tribune's 4A MVP last season, signed a national letter of intent to play for UNLV's women's basketball program earlier this week.

A 5-foot-10 guard, Kroneberger helped the Red Devils go 20-4 last season. She averaged 16.4 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.6 steals and 2.1 assists per game as a senior.

"Ashley is going to give us her best every time she's on the floor," said UNLV coach Kathy Olivier. "A very smart player and a hard worker, Ashley will be a good addition to our team and a great fit with the players we have returning."

---------------

Former Judge Memorial star Brandon Veltri is the new coach at Carroll College in Montana, and he will be coaching at least one Utahn next year.

Veltri's first signing class includes Highland High's Taylor Janoe, a post player. Actually, Janoe committed to the previous coach, but just recently signed.

"Taylor has a ton of potential," said Veltri. "We are very excited about his strength and size." Janoe, 6-7, helped Highland to a second-place finish in Region 6 last season. He's also an excellent student, with a 3.8 GPA.

Football: LSU offers Brighton High's Ricky Heimuli
Another day, another offer from a big-time college football power for Brighton High defensive tackle Ricky Heimuli.

Wednesday's offer came from LSU, according to Ricky's brother, Sefo Heimuli, a sophomore at Snow College in Ephraim, Utah.

"Ricky spoke with Coach Miles, Coach Haley and with Coach Yanowski who's the one recruiting him," Sefa said. "Ricky is excited about the offer because he loves what they have been doing there at LSU and the success they've been having. Ricky is going to try and make a trip out there as well.

The offer from LSU is the 19th for Heimuli, a junior.

--------------

Also, Utah women's soccer coach Rich Manning announced that he has signed a seventh athlete to his team for 2009.

Allie Wisner, an attacking player from Bozeman, Mont., recently signed a national letter of intent to play for the Utes.

Wisner was a four-time all-state and all-conference pick in Montana, and helped Bozeman High to three straight 2A state championships.

Football: Brighton's Heimuli gets offer No. 18, from Oregon
Brighton High defensive tackle Ricky Heimuli can now cross the Pac-10 off his list -- his list of conferences where every school in that conference has offered him a football scholarship.

Heimuli's brother, Sefo, said in an email Tuesday morning that Oregon just gave Ricky his 18th offer.

Now, every school in the Pac-10 has offered, along with Utah, BYU, Utah State, Michigan State, Michigan, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Colorado.

Heimuli said that Oregon defensive line coach Jerry Azzinaro was at Brighton High today and made the offer and seeing the 6-foot-4, 285-pound junior in person.
Basketball: Utah State announces the signing of two guards
We mentioned last week that Utah State had received a commitment from Tyrone White, a 6-foot-6 shooting guard from Portland, Ore.

The Aggies made it official today, announcing that White has signed a national letter of intent. Utah State also said that Preston Medlin, a 6-3 guard from Hebron High in Texas, has signed his letter.

White averaged 16.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game for the Air Force Academy Prep School last season and helped the team go 25-7. White played for Portland's Jefferson High before moving on to Air Force Prep.

Medlin averaged 22.5 points per game as a senior and helped Hebron High go 20-11. He shot 53.0 percent from the field and 44.0 percent from three-point range.

-----------------

Ryan Strong, a 6-2 guard from Lewiston High in Lewiston, Idaho, has signed to play for Salt Lake City's Westminster College. Strong helped lead Lewiston to the Idaho Class 5A state championship as a senior.

He averaged 10 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.8 assists for a team that went 22-4 and won the school's first state title in more than 60 years.

-------------------

Malori Dixon will play for Snow College, Maddie Hind will play for the College of Eastern Utah and Nicole Yazzie will play for Westminster College.

Basketball: SLCC's Walker signs with Westminster
Former Lehi High star Ben Walker, a 6-foot-8 forward, has signed to play for Westminster College in Salt Lake City.

Walker spent last year playing for Salt Lake Community College. Prior to an LDS Church mission to the Phillipines, Walker spent a year at the Air Force Academy.

Walker shot 63.2 percent from the field for the Bruins, and is expected to help replace National Player of the Year Geoff Payne at Westminster.

He chose Westminster over Penn, Princeton and New Jersey Institute of Technology.

Westminster went 30-5 last season, won the Frontier Conference Championship and made it to the NAIA quarterfinals.
Basketball: Lone Peak's Dillon Smith signs with Air Force
Lone Peak High's Dillon Smith signed to play basketball for Air Force last week, but don't expect the 6-foot-2 shooting guard to play for the Falcons for quite some time.

Smith, who averaged around 10 points a game for the 5A runner-up last season, expects to receive his LDS Church mission call next week and will leave for two years in the middle of the summer.

When he returns, the plan is for him to play a year for the Air Force Academy Prep School, then join the Mountain West Conference's Falcons.

Because of the time frame "the signing was [symbolic]," Smith said. "Just to get a commitment from me on paper, I guess."

Smith said he chose AFA because it is a good fit for him and because he likes the offensive system. Although Northern Arizona offered him a scholarship prior to the season (which he declined), he said he had no other Division I offers.

Some schools that had expressed interest cooled when they learned Smith was leaving on a mission this summer.

He was invited to be a preferred walk-on at several schools, he said.

Surrounded by several other D-I players at Lone Peak, Smith wasn't able to put up impressive numbers.

However, he had a strong summer AAU season in 2008 playing for the Utah Swoosh, averaging more than 28 points per game and shooting 65 percent from the field, according to his club coach, Dave Houle.

In one game he scored 40 points against the Oakland Rebels, shooting 13-for-17 from the field, including 9-for-10 from three-point range.
Football: Most-recruited prep QB in state history? Might be PG's Lloyd
It is quickly becoming apparent that Pleasant Grove High's Dallas Lloyd will complete his high school career as the most-recruited quarterback in state history.

More than Scott Mitchell or Jim McMahon. More than Brandon Doman. More than Riley Nelson or James Lark. When Bruce Hardy came out of Bingham High in 1974 and was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated, he was highly recruited (he ended up playing tight end at Arizona State). But nothing like this.

Just follow the offers.

Lloyd, the 6-foot-3, 205-pounder who helped the Vikings make it to the 5A state semifinals last year, received offers No. 8 and No. 9 recently -- from Nebraska and Miami.

Lloyd's father, Casey, noted in an email that the Miami offer was significant to Dallas because the Hurricanes have been his favorite team growing up.

Other schools that have offered include BYU, Utah, Utah State, Wyoming, Syracuse, Tulsa and Stanford.

Dallas is also receiving a lot of interest from Vanderbilt, Oregon, Kansas State, Michigan State, Arizona State, Washington and TCU, according to his father.

Stanford sent coaches out to visit and observe last week. Nebraska, BYU, Utah, MSU, Utah State and others have also stopped by the PG campus. Miami is scheduled to visit this week.

Casey Lloyd said his son will attend a lot of camps and workouts this summer and wants to get in a few visits and make his decision before the Vikings' season begins in August against three-time defending 4A champion Timpview.

Rovetti told the Reno Gazette-Journal that she has wanted to play for the Cougars since she was a small child.

She averaged 11.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.8 steals and 2.8 assists last season and said she will sign a national letter of intent with coach Jeff Judkins' program in November.
Rovetti was an All-North (Nevada) pick her sophomore and junior seasons and her team finished second in state both years. She was a third-team all-state pick last season.
She's also a track star, having placed third in the 100 meters and second in the 200 at last year's Nevada state track meet.

Football: Utah State adds two late signees
Utah State's football program continues to add to its 2009 signing class.

The Aggies announced recently that they have signed two more players to national letters of intent.

Linebackers Connor Williams of Kanata, Ontario, Canada, and Devin Johnson of Glendora, Calif., signed with USU last week.

Willams, 6-3, 226, will be a freshman in the fall. He also had offers from Rice, Buffalo and Toledo. He played high school football at Holy Trinity High, where he was a two-time first-team all-region pick.

Johnson, 6-3, 240, will have two years of eligibility after playing for Citrus College last season. He also had an offer from Iowa State. Johnson played high school football at Rancho Cucamongo H.S. in California.

Football: Brighton's Heimuli gets offer No. 17, from Michigan
Another college football power has thrown its hat into the ring for Brighton High defensive tackle Ricky Heimuli.

The junior received his 17th offer on Friday, this one from the University of Michigan.

"Michigan emailed him and told him they sent his official offer in the mail earlier this week," Heimuli's brother, Sefa, reported in an email to the Tribune.

A 6-foot-4, 285-pound junior who rates four stars (out of five) from Scout.com, Heimuli now has offers from every Pac-10 schools except Oregon, Utah's three major college programs (BYU, Utah and Utah State), Oklahoma, Nebraska, Colorado, Michigan State and Michigan.
