Women's basketball: West Jordan's Rodriguez, six others sign with Dixie State
Dixie State College in St. George has signed seven players to its women’s basketball program, including one player from Utah and another who played junior college basketball in the Beehive State.
West Jordan’s Gabrielle Rodriguez was one of coach Angela Kristensen’s seven signings. The Red Storm also signed two players last November during the early signing period.
A 5-foot-5 point guard, Rodriguez was a 5A all-state honorable mention honoree as a senior. She averaged 7.0 points and 7.1 assists for the Jaguars last season.
“Gabby is someone who we feel slid under the radar as far as recruiting goes,” said Kristensen. “We saw her at our camp last summer and loved her game. She is an extremely heady point guard that sees the floor well. Along with her passing abilities, Gabby is a great outside shooter and can also get to the rim off the dribble.”
The other players signing with DSC were: Na’Chelle Catron (Moreno Valley, Calif.), Amber Scruggs (Los Angeles, Calif.), Veronica Siqueros (Phoenix, Ariz.), Johnna Brown (Las Vegas, Nev.), Vajae Robinson (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Chanel Maxey (Anaheim, Calif.)
Siqueros played the last two seasons at the College of Eastern Utah in Price. She averaged seven points a game for the Golden Eagles.

Basketball: Provo's Collinsworth visits ASU, Kansas
When a high-profile program such as Kansas jumps into the picture, you know the kid is turning into a national recruit.

That's the story this summer on Kyle Collinsworth, the Provo High guard who is by far the most recruited local prep basketball player from the class of 2010 (rising seniors).

A quick update on Collinsworth:

He went on an unofficial visit to Arizona State last week, then attended the Elite Camp at Kansas.

At ASU, Collinsworth worked out for two days in front of coach Herb Sendek and his staff. He was also able to meet ASU's athletic director, strength and conditioning coaches, the team nutritionist and several academic advisors. He got a complete tour of the new basketball training facility.

ASU is now recruiting Collinsworth heavily, with Sendek having visited Provo to watch him play.

Sources say Collinsworth's play in Las Vegas last April has boosted his prominence nationally.

As for Kansas, Collinsworth was also given the red carpet treatment in Lawrence. He was given a tour of the campus and met with the coaches and some of the Jayhawks' top players.

Kansas didn't offer, but its coaches said they will continue to watch Collinsworth the rest of the summer.

Collinsworth has been at the Utah State team camp with his Provo High teammates this past week.

The rest of the month will be spent attending the NBA Top 100 camp in Virginia and attending the BYU team camp with his teammates.

Along with Arizona State and Kansas, Baylor, UCLA, Florida and Oklahoma State have jumped into the picture for Collinsworth, according to a source familiar with his recruitment.

Football: Utah State offers Mountain Crest junior QB Kuresa
With Pleasant Grove's Dallas Lloyd having committed to Stanford last week, some are starting to wonder which player will be the next great Utah prep quarterback.

Lloyd will be a senior at PG this fall.

The best quarterback who will be a junior (class of 2011) just might be Alex Kuresa, a starter at Mountain Crest High in the Cache Valley since his freshman year.

Kuresa recently received his first college scholarship offer -- from nearby Utah State.

New coach Gary Andersen apparently made the offer over the weekend.

Kuresa, 6-0 and 165 lbs., helped Mountain Crest go 10-2 and win the Region 5 championship as a sophomore last season. He completed 164 of 237 passes for 2,382 yards and 21 touchdowns.

Kuresa is the younger brother of former BYU star offensive lineman Jake Kuresa and the cousin of BYU basketball signee Tyler Haws.

His father, Dave Kuresa, an offensive lineman, played for the Aggies in the early 1980s.

Basketball: 3A MVP Bronson of Bear River signs with Dixie State
Bear River basketball star Wade Bronson, the Class 3A MVP last season after leading the Bears to the 3A state championship, has signed a national letter of intent to play for Dixie State College.

Brady earned honorable mention All-America status after helping SLCC reach the Region 18 tournament semifinals.

Utes add commitments
The Utah Utes picked up two commitments Wednesday, bringing the number of oral commitments for the 2010 football program to five.
Princeton Collins, a 6-foot, 190-pound running back out of Westwood H.S. in Round Rock, Texas committed to the Utes along with Terrell Reese, a 6-2, 190-pound wide receiver/safety out of Brenham H.S. in Brenham, Texas.
Collins said he is looking at several other schools but decided on the Utes because of their high rankings recently.
"I feel like they are a really good college and they offered me and I went for it," he said.
It also helped that he previously had been in touch with new Utah assistant coach Blake Miller, who joined the Utes in February after coaching at Rice the last two seasons.
"We've been talking off and on," Collins said.
Collins will make his first visit to Utah this summer and plans to take other visits, but said his commitment was "really firm."
Reese also said his commitment was firm and said he became a Utah fan after watching the Utes beat Alabama in the Sugar Bowl.
He chose the Utes over Colorado and Nebraska. He plans to visit the Utes this summer and said it could be his only visit.
"This is my final decision," he said.
The latest commitments join Joe Kruger (6-8, 245-pound defensive end, Timpanogos H.S.), Jacoby Hale (6-1, 195-pound linebacker, Central H.S. in Beaumont, Texas) and Josh Huff (5-10, 185-pound running back, Aldine Nimitz in Houston, Texas) as commitments.
Football: BYU target QB Jake Heaps of Washington will announce college choice Thursday
Jake Heaps, rated as the No. 1 high school quarterback in the country from the class of 2010 by scout.com, has made his decision regarding where he will play college football. Heaps, who has BYU among his list of favorites, will make the announcement on Thursday, according to a publicist, John Davis.

In a note to media members, Davis noted, "I wanted to make you aware that Jake has recently reached a decision regarding his collegiate choice. He would like to announce that Thursday."

According to the release, as of June 1, 2009, Heaps had officially been offered scholarships from the following 26 schools: Alabama, ASU, BYU, Cal, Colorado, Duke, Florida State, Georgia, Kansas, LSU, Miami, Minnesota, Mississippi St, Nebraska, Notre Dame, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon State, Pitt, Stanford, South Carolina, Tennessee, UCLA, Boise State, Washington and Washington State.

In two years as a starter for Skyline (sophomore 2007 & junior 2008), Heaps is 28-0, and has led his team to back-to-back state championships.

Football: Pleasant Grove QB Dallas Lloyd commits to Stanford
Dallas Lloyd, the highly-recruited quarterback from Utah's Pleasant Grove High, has orally committed to Stanford.

Lloyd confirmed to The Tribune's Tony Jones on Tuesday afternoon that he committed to Stanford coaches on Sunday night.

The family was delaying the announcement so Lloyd could contact coaches at other schools that were recruiting him, but decided to confirm it Tuesday when news of Sunday's commitment began to leak out.

Lloyd was scheduled to attend BYU's Junior Day this Friday, but those plans are apparently canceled.

Lloyd had 11 offers, recently getting invitations from Vanderbilt and TCU, but had said BYU, Utah and Stanford were his three favorites.

He visited Stanford's campus over the weekend, along with his parents, grandparents and siblings.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound rising senior was recruited to Stanford by Cardinal assistant Lance Anderson, who, like Lloyd, is LDS.

Lloyd has said he will probably go on an LDS Church mission, most likely before he enrolls at Stanford.

The Cardinal also has a commitment from another Utah County star, Timpview safety Chris Badger.

Last year, Stanford also landed perhaps the top LDS quarterback in the country, Taysom Hill of Pocatello, Idaho. Hill will also likely serve a church mission before enrolling.

Lloyd helped the Vikings go 10-2 his junior season. He completed 93 of 169 passes for 1,689 yards and 15 touchdowns with just four interceptions.
Football: PG QB Lloyd gets two more offers, will decide "very soon."
Just got a quick update on Dallas Lloyd, the quarterback from Pleasant Grove High who now has 11 offers from Division I football programs.

I wrote a few weeks ago that I believe before it is all said and done, Lloyd will be the most-recruited quarterback in state history.

Several readers disagreed, bringing up names such as former Timpview quarterbacks Mike Affleck and Danny Southwick, among others. Springville's Scott Mitchell and Pine View's James Lark also received a lot of attention.

I'm standing by my assessment, however. None of those quarterbacks received the number of offers from high-caliber programs across the country that Lloyd has received.

Sure, times are different. Thanks to the internet and the rise of Utah high school football on a national level, Lloyd has been exposed to far more programs than the aforementioned.

Anyway, I digress.

Lloyd's father, Casey, said that Dallas received two more offers over the weekend -- from TCU and Vanderbilt -- bringing his total to 11.

Vanderbilt is the first SEC team to offer, so Lloyd now has offers from the Big East (Syracuse), the Pac-10 (Stanford), the SEC (Vandy), the ACC (Miami), Conference USA (Tulsa), the Big 12 (Nebraska), the WAC (Utah State) and the Mountain West (BYU, Utah, Wyoming).

Lloyd has said that Stanford, BYU and Utah are his favorites.

"He will be deciding very soon on where he will be playing," Casey Lloyd said.

Women's golf: Weber State signs a Twin Falls standout
Weber State women's golf coach Jeff Smith looked north for his latest recruit, landing Sara Federico of Twin Falls, Idaho.

Federico recently signed a national letter of intent to join Weber State's successful women's golf program.

"We are very pleased to have signed Sara," said Smith. "She is an outstanding and well-rounded student-athlete."

Federico was a four-time letterwinner in golf for Twin Falls High School. She lettered three times in volleyball and basketball and was named the team MVP in both sports for the 2008-09 season.

In golf, Federico was named Second Team All-Conference in 2006 and First Team All-Conference in 2007 and 2008. She was named the Region 4,5,6 Player of the Year in 2009 and led Twin Falls to three-straight State Championships from 2007-2009. She finished fourth overall in the state tournament in 2007 and improved one spot each year to a third place in 2008 and a second place in 2009.
