Football: PG's Lloyd, Jordan's Hart among West's top QBs
Pleasant Grove quarterback Dallas Lloyd, who has committed to Stanford, is the top "dual threat" high school quarterback in the West, according to some rankings released today by the Web site Scout.com.

The site also lists the top all-around quarterbacks in the West, and topping the rankings is Jake Heaps, the qb from Skyline High in Sammamish, Wash., who has committed to BYU.

"The nation's top-ranked quarterback, Heaps is polished, poised and a winner, having gone 28-0 as a varsity quarterback with two state titles," the site noted.

Regarding Lloyd, the site said, "Can beat you on the run or with his arm and plays with a lot of fire, exactly what you want in a quarterback."

Jordan High senior Alex Hart is on the "Next 10" list, while Brian Blechen of Moorpark, Calif., who has committed to Utah, is on the "Other Quarterbacks to Watch" list.

Football: Timpview's Kaufusi, a BYU commit, is out for year with torn ACL
The senior whom most recruiting services call the best football player in Utah this year, Timpview defensive end Bronson Kaufusi, has played his last down of high school football.

Kaufusi, tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in Timpview's 34-28 win over Highland High of Pocatello, Idaho, on Friday night, said his father, BYU defensive line coach Steve Kaufusi.

Bronson Kaufusi, who has committed to play football for BYU, will also miss the basketball season. He has been a two-year starting power forward for the T-Birds.

Steve Kaufusi said his son was flown home after the game at Holt Arena, and an MRI Saturday morning revealed the damage.

"He's pretty down about it," Steve Kaufusi said. "Nobody wants to miss their entire senior year."

Bronson Kaufusi turns 19 next July and plans on going on an LDS Church mission before enrolling at BYU.

Football: Will BYU have inside track on Idaho QB phenom?
There's a young prep football player from Idaho that BYU fans should probably start keeping an eye on.

Tanner Mangum is a sophomore quarterback at Timberline High in Boise and the younger brother of BYU senior Parker Mangum.

Parker Mangum went to BYU as a walk-on quarterback after his former college, St. Mary's, dropped football, but switched to receiver this season.

Tanner Mangum passed for 2,865 yards and 29 touchdowns last year -- as a freshman. He was 219-for-339 and was picked off just eight times.

MaxPreps.com recently named Mangum to its Class of 2012 Top 100 players list.

Football: Alta linebacker A'i Ho-Ching narrows his list
Dan Sorensen of the Web site UteZone.com is reporting that Alta High linebacker Toloa'i Ho-Ching has narrowed his college choices to BYU and Wisconsin.

Ho-Ching, a senior, sat out of Alta's win over Cottonwood last Friday, but is expected to play this week when the Hawks travel to Bingham to take on the Miners.

Ho-Ching said last week that he will visit Wisconsin the weekend of Sept. 5-7.

The 6-foot-1, 215-pound senior has written offers from Wyoming and Utah State, along with BYU and Wisconsin.

He is ranked No. 89 among the top 150 high school seniors in the West by Scout.com.

Set to join the Griffins are Woods Cross guard Heather Anderson, Cyprus guard Kristie Henriod and Angela Fales, a forward from Big Bend Community College in Bend, Ore.

Anderson, 5-10, played at Otero Junior College last year and shot 39.1 percent from three-point range as a sophomore.

Henriod, 5-7, was a first-team all-state pick at Cyprus. She averaged 21.8 points per game for the Pirates.

Fales prepped at Capital High in Boise before her juco career. She averaged 10.1 points per game at Big Bend last year.

Women's Basketball: BYU lands Timpanogos center Morgan Bailey
Morgan Bailey, a 6-2 center from Timpanogos High in Orem, Utah, has orally committed to play women's basketball for BYU.

Bailey committed to BYU coach Jeff Judkins on Tuesday after visiting the campus on Monday.

She was the third-leading scorer in Class 5A last year with a 16.1 average. She also averaged 10.2 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game for the Timberwolves last season.

"I just felt good about it," she said. "BYU has always been my top school."

Bailey also had offers from UNLV, Utah State and Southern Utah.

She played this past summer for the Utah Flight club team which was successful at several national tournaments, including one third-place finish.

The Timberwolves recently hired former BYU star Melinda Johnsen as their new women's basketball coach, after former coach Liz Darger took a position at Utah Valley University.

Basketball: Provo's Collinsworth names a Final Four
The state's best boys basketball player from the class of 2010 is apparently getting closer to making his college choice.

Provo High's Kyle Collinsworth, a 6-foot-5 combo guard, has narrowed his list to four schools, scouthoops.com reported Monday.

Collinsworth's Final Four are BYU, Stanford, USC and Virginia. As previously reported by The Tribune, all four schools have made scholarship offers to the senior.

"Those were the ones that showed the most interest in me when I was young and they were some of the first schools recruiting me and I respected that," Collinsworth told the Web site.

He will visit all four schools, and already has an official visit to Virginia scheduled for Aug. 28. Recruits can take official visits anytime after the first day of their senior year.

------------------

Layton Christian's Jasmine Porter is No. 92 on the ESPNU HoopGurlz Top 100 list that was released Monday morning.

Porter, a 6-foot-2 senior power forward, is the 18th-best power forward in the country, according to the site.

Porter has more than a dozen offers, including invitations from Utah State and Utah.

---------------------

V.J. Fehoko, a linebacker from Farrington High in Hawaii, has narrowed his list to five favorites, and the list includes both Utah and Utah State.

Football: Alta LB Toloa'i Ho-Ching has offers, but stays patient
One of the state's most-recruited high school football players this year, Alta High linebacker Toloa'i Ho-Ching, says he is in no hurry to pick a college even though some of his favorite schools -- such as BYU -- are close to running out of scholarships.

"I don't really have a deadline," Ho-Ching said. "Me and my dad and my grandpa have to pray about it, and then I will probably decide."

Scout.com recently came out with its list of the top 150 high school seniors in the West, and Ho-Ching is No. 89.

Wednesday night, Ho-Ching said he is 6-1 and weighs between 215 and 220 pounds.

The all-stater said he has official, written offers from Wyoming, Wisconsin, Utah State and BYU and that a handful of other schools are close to offering but want to watch him play a few games this season.

Schools on that list include Stanford, UCLA and Penn State, he said.

He has already set up one official visit. Ho-Ching said he will go to Wisconsin on Sept. 5 to watch the Badgers play Northern Illinois.

He said his top three schools right now are BYU, Wisconsin and Stanford and that Wisconsin seems to be recruiting him the hardest.

He said he has grown up a BYU fan and likes the school partly because his parents both went there.

And he has already qualified academically for most schools, with a 3.7 GPA and a passing score on the ACT test.

-----------------------------

Ho-Ching certainly isn't the only Utahn on the West Top 150 list.

Timpview's Bronson Kaufusi (a BYU commit) is No. 11, followed by Brighton defensive tackle Ricky Heimuli (uncommitted ) at No. 19.

Pleasant Grove quarterback Dallas Lloyd (Stanford commit) is No. 56 and Bingham lineman Tuni Kanuch (BYU commit) is No. 90.

Pleasant Grove defensive end Joe Kruger (Utah commit ) is No. 97 and Alta lineman Jordan Black (BYU commit) is No. 145.

Kruger played for Timpanogos last year, but has transferred to PG.

----------------

Fun story in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram about the matchup between Utah's Bingham High and Texas' Euless Trinity in the new Dallas Cowboys Stadium on Sept. 7.
I especially got a chuckle out of Bingham coach Dave Peck's final comment: "I just hope we are able to give them a game."
Utah State basketball: Autry reportedly commits to USU
According to multiple reports, Aggies coach Stew Morrill has received a verbal commitment from Vaughn Autry, a 6-foot-2 point guard out of Gardena Serra High in California.
Autry has been described as a good athlete who has the ability to get into the lane off the dribble. He would be a freshman at USU next season and give Morrill a quick, athletic option at the point to replace All-WAC point guard Jared Quayle, who is entering his senior season.
Autry, who was also recruited by California State Northridge, averaged 16 points, six assists and three steals per game last season.

Tony Jones
Girls soccer: Davis GK Jamie Wilkinson commits to Arizona
Davis High goalkeeper Jamie Wilkinson has commited to play college soccer for the University of Arizona.

Wilkinson also had offers from Santa Clara, Marquette, Oregon, Pepperdine, Brown, Fresno State, Idaho, Utah and Utah State.

She is 32-4 as Davis' goalkeeper and has helped her team win two region titles.

At the club level, Wilkinson plays for La Roca Premier and has helped that team win three straight state championships.

Basketball: Brighton's Miller brothers had stellar summer
Thanks to a faithful recruiting trail reader for passing along this report on a couple of Utah basketball players who were featured in the West Coast Hoops Report.

Brighton High's Corbin Miller (who will be a junior this fall) and his brother, Brandon Miller (who will be a freshman, played on the Salt Lake Metro Prospects traveling team this summer.

Both played in the Fullcourt Press Cream of the Crop Challenge July 14-15 at Cabrillo High School in Long Beach, Calif., and Lynwood High School in Lynwood, Calif.

Here's what the report had to say about the brothers:

5'10 Brandon Miller PG 2013 Brighton HS (UT)

Any list of 2013 prospect must have his name near the top. A very nice all around player for someone so young. He can handle and pass, shoots it well from three-point range and has a nice pull up game. Possesses unusual confidence for someone who has yet to play a high school game. High major prospect.

6'2 Corbin Miller SG 2011 Brighton HS (UT)

He's a natural two guard who is showing some ability to play at the point. A big time shooter with a fairly quick release. He also has a nice pull up game in the half court. Does not possess much quickness and this may hinder his chances of ultimately signing with a high major school. Stay tuned.

Girls Basketball: Offers aplenty for LCA's Jasmine Porter
I've written quite a bit about the unquestioned top boys basketball player in Utah's class of 2010, Provo's Kyle Collinsworth.

It is becoming more and more clear that the top girls basketball player in the state from that same class is Jasmine Porter of Layton Christian, a small school in Davis County.

Recently featured in a ESPN Hoopgurlz article, the 6-foot-2 wing has some of the top women's basketball programs in the country looking at her, including Big 12 and Pac-10 schools.

Hoopgurlz gives Porter an 81 rating, equivalent to four stars and says she has the potential to be a three- to four-year starter at the major college level.

Porter currently has more than 20 scholarship offers; including offers from Utah State and Utah and will likely narrow her list to eight in the immediate future, according to her club coach Salt Lake Metro's Dave Hammer.

Porter is rated as the No. 99 player in the nation by National Basketball Insider.

Basketball: USC jumps into the recruiting battle for Provo's Collinsworth
There's a new player in the recruiting battle for Provo High combo guard Kyle Collinsworth.

The 6-foot-6 rising senior received a scholarship offer from USC immediately after the recent Best of Summer Tournament in Los Angeles.

The Trojans evidently were impressed by Collinsworth's floor vision, ability to get to the rim, passing and basketball sense, among other attributes.

Collinsworth has said his favorites are BYU, Kansas, Arizona State, Virginia and Stanford. But that was before USC offered, and before Virginia landed a commitment from Joe Harris, a shooting guard from Chelan, Wash.

Other schools that are still expressing interest in Collinsworth include Baylor, Colorado, Georgetown, Gonzaga, Florida, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, SMU, UCLA, UNLV, Utah, Utah State and Wake Forest.

Football: Two Utahns on ESPNU's top 150 list
Looks like ESPNU has come out with its list of the top 150 high school football players in the country from the class of 2010 (this year's seniors).

Two players from the state of Utah made the list: Brighton High defensive tackle Ricky Heimuli is at 139 and Timpview defensive end Bronson Kaufusi is at 148.

Only 13 states have more players on the list than Utah, which is tied at two players with Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Mississippi and Oregon.

Heimuli has not committed to a school yet, but has a list of 10 favorites that includes Utah.

Kaufusi, son of BYU defensive line coach Steve Kaufusi, has committed to BYU.

The Cougars have two commits on the list: quarterback Jake Heaps of Skyline High in Washington is at No. 131.

Virginia's Phillip Sims (No. 36) is the top QB on the list, followed by Jesse Scroggins of California (No. 57). Heaps is sixth among QBs.

Here's the link.

Girls Basketball: Utah offers American Fork sophomore Grace Farnsworth
The University of Utah has offered a women's basketball scholarship to a sophomore at American Fork High.

According to Mary Waters, coach of the Utah Flight girls basketball club team, AF sophomore Grace Farnsworth received the offer from Utah coach Elaine Elliott at the recent Utah team camp.

After watching Farnsworth play in eight games over the course of three days, the Utes made the offer, Waters notes on the club's Web site.

Farnsworth saw some action as a freshman on AF's 5A state championship team last season.

Basketball: Utah Pump N Run White wins its pool in Los Angeles
We've mentioned how the Utah Pump n Run Red team fared at the Best of Summer tournament in Los Angeles last week.

Turns out, the Utah Pump N Run White team of 17-year-olds also had a nice run.

The team went undefeated in pool play to win its pool, then lost in bracket play to a double pump elite team.

The team included Jordan Benardo (Jordan), Colton Bergen, Kyle Davis (Alta), Joe Bourne (Olympus), Matt Sumsion (Springville), William Walker (Lehi), Lincoln Selk and Josh Van Weezep (Davis).
