The early signing period for basketball (and several other sports) came and went earlier this week, and BYU’s basketball program still has one available scholarship to pass out.
The Cougars signed Provo guard Kyle Collinsworth and Anson Winder, a guard from Bishop Gorman High in Las Vegas.
It appears that the Cougars will play out this season, assess what needs they have, and sign a player in April -- probably a junior college transfer.
One candidate is Stephen Rogers, a 6-foot-8 redshirt freshman at Mesa Community College in Arizona. Rogers is averaging 20 points and seven rebounds a game for MCC so far this season.
After graduating from Mountain View High in Mesa in 2006, Rogers signed with the University of San Diego. But USD’s coach was fired while Rogers was on an LDS Church mission, and when he returned the new staff did not take him back.
So Rogers signed with Arizona State, and sat on the Sun Devils’ bench last year, redshirting. Now he’s at Mesa Community College, and flourishing.
He told ArizonaPreps.com that he is receiving interest from BYU, Boise State, Eastern Washington and Northern Arizona.
Southern Utah, Utah Valley State, Utah State and Fresno State have also kept tabs on him.
BYU has not offered Rogers, but is aware of him, according to someone who would know.

Southern Utah University has announced it has signed three basketball players to national letters of intent, including a former Alta High star who is currently on an LDS Church mission and a player from Idaho who has transferred to Alta.
Coach Roger Reid’s Thunderbirds have signed former Alta star Tyson Koehler, Mountain Crest center Cal Hanks and Kyle Davis, a senior at Centennial High in Boise, Idaho.
Koehler, a 6-9 sophomore, played at Grayson County College in Texas for a season after graduating from Alta, and is currently on a mission in North Carolina.
The T-birds signed him in 2008, but had to re-sign him, due to NCAA rules. He averaged 9.6 points and 6.4 rebounds a game at Grayson, and was a first-team all-conference honoree.
Hanks is a 6-11 senior at Mountain Crest in the Cache Valley and was an all-region performer last season. He averaged 7.2 points, 9.2 rebounds and three blocks per game as a junior.
The Intermountain Hoops Scouting Service calls Hanks the top 2010 post prospect in Utah for this coming prep season.
Davis is a 6-7 senior who averaged 14 points and 10 rebounds for Centennial as a junior. He has moved to Utah, however, and will play for Alta this winter.

BYU’s men’s volleyball program has signed a pair of outside hitters to national letters of intent.
Here’s the release from BYU:

BYU men’s volleyball head coach Shawn Patchell announced that outside hitters Taylor Sander and Josue Rivera have committed to play for the Cougars by signing national letters of intent.

“We’re really excited to sign these players during the early signing period,” said Patchell. “This could possibly be the best recruiting class we’ve ever had here at BYU. We’ll just have to wait and see how they perform on the court and in the classroom.”

Sander, a native of Norco, Calif., was the captain of the USA Youth National Team that competed for a world championship this summer in Italy. He helped lead his Norco High School team to victory in the 2009 CIF Division 3 title match, earning himself school and league MVP distinction. Averaging more than 20 kills in the postseason, he was key in Norco’s success. Sander has received numerous first-team all-league, all-county and all-region honors.

A team captain of the Puerto Rico Youth National Team, Rivera helped lead his team to a bronze medal at the NORCECA Men’s Continental Championship in October. He will come to BYU from Puerto Rico’s Colegio San Ignacio de Loyola.

The early signing period ends tomorrow.
