Bob knew

In a story in today's Tribune, Robert Gehrke, who has been mining federal, state and utility company documents since the Crandall Canyon coal mine disaster, reports that the mine owner Bob Murray knew about so-called seismic "bounces" in the mine six months before the disaster killed six miners, along with three of their would-be rescuers.

"The minutes show that Robert Murray, co-owner of the mine, knew of the severe mine "bounce" on March 10... . Murray, who led the rescue effort in August, said at that time he had no knowledge of the bounce."

Murray's lawyers fought all the way to the California Supreme Court to keep the documents from being made public. Murray said the disaster could not have been prevented because the bounce was "God's will."
