G.I. Jill

Utah has its best chance in more than two decades to win the Miss America pageant.

Jill Stevens is about as kick-ass of a contender as we could hope for.

That's Sgt. Stevens, by the way -- a Utah National Guard medic who spent a year in Afghanistan treating shrapnel wounds and ducking rocket-propelled grenades. She kicks back by running marathons.

A brutal Miss America competition will begin in Vegas Jan. 21. Sarge might want to take her body armor along.

She's doing great so far on the reality show TLC has going for contestants (Miss America: Reality Check). They've actually done some interesting things to try and get a new audience interested in the pageant and to try and modernize the contestants.

As someone who was brought up on Miss America, it's nice to see them trying to make it relevant rather than just letting it die. We'll have to see if it affects the final competition itself (the last few hours we usually see on tv), but I hope so.
