Orrin's got your back, Rick
Former University of Utah coach Rick Majerus, who is catching flack at Saint Louis University from a Catholic archbishop, is getting support from a powerful Utah friend — Sen. Orrin Hatch.
Majerus g
ot crosswise with Archbishop Raymond Burke after expressing support for abortion and stem-cell research at a Hillary Clinton rally. Majerus' elderly mother, a Catholic, is shaken — Burke not only called for disciplinary action by Saint Louis University, but said he would deny Majerus Holy Communion.
UPDATE: At Gov. Jon Huntsman's monthly KUED press briefing this morning — the governor, who along with his philantrophist father are close to Majerus, said he has not called the coach. "He's a friend and I would do whatever I could for him," the governor said.
Huntsman says he doesn't share Majerus' pro-abortion stand, but, "He's a good man in other ways and he's a good friend."
A column by Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Dispatch says the most meaningful message of solace Majerus received came from Hatch. They've been friends since Majerus coached at the U.
Politically, they agree on very little. Hatch is a conservative Republican. Majerus is a liberal Democrat. They’ve had spirited debates over gun control, abortion rights, the death penalty, and stem-cell research. The two friends have engaged in spirited but civil discourse. But each man respects the other for sticking to his beliefs that are based on principle. ...Hatch, of course, has taken his own political risks to support stem-cell research.
So Majerus was touched when Hatch sent a message Wednesday, telling Majerus that he admired The Coach for being a stand-up guy in stating his beliefs on abortion rights and stem cell research.

Majerus may be the most complicated Utahn to live out of our state since Orrin Hatch. The recent Sports Illustrated is full of his eccentricities. But at the U., professors received his calls often as he checked up on his players and their grades. Andre' Miller is a good example of someone who was going nowhere and now has a Bachelor's degree and a regular job in the NBA.
Still, Strange dude....
