M Day

It's do or die day for Mitt Romney -- even though he insists it is not.
If Mitt can't carry Michigan, where his father George was governor and he is virtually a native son -- he might as well save the rest of his war chest to run for Senate in Utah. A sure bet.
An interesting essay in the New York Times today takes a different tack on the man. Dean Barnett argues that Romney is anything but a flip-flopping, do-anything-to-get-elected phony.
The Mitt Romney I got to know was warm and likable. He had an electric intelligence. He was unfailingly decent. He was totally committed to his family. He treated everyone with respect and kindness. This Mormon Mother Teresa, Barnett argues, has simply adopted a misguided campaign strategy, that for him is, well -- phony.
On the other hand...
Just when you give Mitt the benefit of the doubt -- he goes and stages a mendacious photo op.
Media around the country portrayed Romney, says Politico.com, as "the picture of empathy as he sat at the Marshall, Mich. kitchen table of 51-year-old Elizabeth Sachs, a single mother of two who lost her job as a retail manager – as well as her health insurance – and is running out of money as she tries to sell her house to move to Florida."
What Mitt somehow neglects to tell the press is that this famous-for-15 mom with whom he has struck up near-instantaneous empathy happens to be the mother of one of his campaign staffers.
Meanwhile...
The Daily Kos continues to incite Michigan Democrats to crossover and vote for Mitt in the Republican primary. Check out this very funny video pitch for Mitt as "the Republican candidate Democrats need right now."
