The price of Crandall Canyon coal
The families of nine coal miners killed in the Crandall Canyon mine disaster have started the process of suing in federal court the utilities that used the coal.
The court filing today does not involve the mine's operator Bob Murray or his companies.
Last week, the Tribune reported that documents show Murray knew about so-called seismic "bounces" in the mine months before the disaster.
Meanwhile, a state commission created after the disaster recommended today that federal and state regulators share mining plans and inspection reports and work together on ways to improve safety. But the Commission stopped short of saying Utah should set up its own mine-safety agency.
"Is the state doing everything it should to promote mine safety? The answer is clearly no," said commission chairman Scott Matheson.
