Prophet, seer and enigma
The Tribune today looks into what to expect from the likely new Mormon Church leader who is often described as "an enigma."
The headline says it all: "Monson has what it takes to lead church, say friends."

Say friends? What I want to know is what enemies say about the guy who will be the most powerful force in Utah. Otherwise, turn the page.
But as usual in Utah, the story does hold some clues if you're willing to read between the lines. Besides a lame fishing joke remembered by Jon Huntsman Sr., Thomas Monson is known for "homey parables about helping widows during the Depression or being a bishop in the 1950s."
Boy, the firesides at BYU are going to be electrifing.
The Trib's former publisher John Gallivan gives non-Mormons some hope, saying Monson, "abides by the golden rule of 'Live and let live.' " It seems that when Monson got a freebee pint of whiskey, he gave it to Gallivan. "He said he was sure I would get more use of it than he would."
Wow, Monson must be a stand-up guy, it usually takes at least a quart of Bushmills to win the esteem of a Trib publisher.
The DNews article offers even less skinny: "Known among church members for his large stature, broad shoulders and personal stories, President Monson seems relatively young at age 80..."

One of my co-workers who is fairly new to Utah and non-Mormon came in to work yesterday saying she thought Thomas Monson looks like Bella Lugosi.
Hmmm. Think I have to agree! And I'm a practicing Mormon.
I think he might've been a bit young to be helping Depression Era widows.
Holden:
Monson will distinguish himself by following the course that President Hinkley set. He is an extremely capable person, and the mantel of the office will qualify him for the challenges that lie ahead. Also, he was a Deacon when he attended to those widows. 2008-68=1932 12 years old.
I wasn't a big fan of Monson growing up, primarily because of his speaking style but he has grown on me.
To Anonymous:Monson may look like Bela Lugosi, but that is where the similarities end. Monson is to the manner born to compassion. Lugosi has a very unfortunate life, and was mistreated by Hollywood.
Monson is an enigma, but a known one at that. He will do well as President and Prophet, and I pray for him as do all LDS believers in good faith.
The departed Prophet, Seer, Revelator, and President, Brother Gordon B. Hinckley, bless him, is now cradled in the loving arms of our Heavenly Father.
Everyone seems to forget Hinckley's involvement with Mark Hoffman and the bombs that killed people .. his church's money paid for the explosives and nails. He authorized the payments, based on his fear of truth being revealed. Why would a good and honest man be afraid of people learning the truth about his faith? The only reason I can think of is that he is NOT truthful or honest ... and that makes that man a liar and a cheat ... and it makes anyone who follows his lead the same thing. Can anyone else think of another reason why the Mormon Church would need the truth withheld? Mountain Meadows massacre is the blotch and stain that Mormons can never erase. Innocent men, women and CHILDREN were murdered to further the Morman agenda and to take their money (which the Morman Church desperately needed) and goods. Brigham Young was reportedly seen riding in a carriage that had once been owned by one of the murder victims. Porter Rockwell was an assassin who worked for Brigham Young, killing dissenters and critics of the Mormons. Why would any "Church" need to take these measures if their "truth" is forthright. Mormons deny their members the basic human right to question what they are told. Thus it is easy to state, unequivocably, one simple fact, ALL MORMONS ARE FOOLS AND MORONS!! Any relatively intelligent, thinking human being would (and should) question the authority of any other human being to hold domain over their lives, thoughts and actions. I don't care how educated, rich, high ranking or socially acceptable a Mormon might be - they are still a fool and moron for accepting such a ridiculous concept and embracing such an antiquated and un-enlightened tenet in their life. Mitt Romney is not qualified to be President because he will do exactly what he is told to do by the Mormon Church ... he was brought up this way (brainwashed in the septic pool of deceit and misinformation the Mormons call doctrine) and he can not violate this basic tenet of the Mormon faith. It's like the Manchurian Candidate, except the brainwashing was done by his parents. family and church. If America truly knew what crap and disinformation the Mormons teach their children and each other, they would laugh Mitt Romney off the political stage. Smoke and mirrors, secret hearings, deceptive smiles that cover faces of white-shirted gangsters bent on proving they are the "one, true church of God". Every agenda stems from this demonic belief and any action that furthers the Mormon agenda is deemed acceptable, including murder and theft ... when it is done in name of the Mormon Church.
Gordon Hinckley waits for Mark Hoffman in hell ... where murderers and those who help them accomplish their deeds await their ecclesiatic fate. Whether he knew he was an accomplice to Hoffman or not before the killings, he certainly knew it afterward. Was he penitent and contrite? No. Hinckley probably played the Mormon no-blame game ... but in his heart, he should have known he was a catalyst in the process of murder, providing the opportunity for such things to happen by giving money to hide his church's unsavory truths. It is perhaps the perfect irony ... by trying to hide the truth about Mormons, he actually exposed it for all the world to see. Lies and deceit to cover up lies and deceit. Such a good man ... I think not. Just another Mormon pitch-man, sent to deceive the world about the true nature of his bretheren and to separate the faithful from their money.
Gosh Anonymous, as an ex-mormon and true atheist, even I find your rant agressive. There are a lot of corrupt individuals in this world, and most of them, believe it or not, are not mormons. Yes, the "Church" has been involved in some controversial and even murderous incidents, but what church hasn't? Blame Hinkley if you must, but let's allow the individual mormon members to practice their religion, as long as they continue to allow us heathens to not practice it. Attacking them for their beliefs does nothing but inspire them to great faith based on the holy "persecution" card. By the way, the best way to not feel compelled to fight against mormonism, is to move to Oregon. : )
Wow anonymous, harsh indeed. Hell. Really? As a former practicing Mormon, I view the "prophets and apostles" about the same way I do my 85 year-old father. They have been so involved and "serving the lord" for so long their perspective is one of innocence, willingness to not question authority and fear of doubting. From my far-off vantage point, Gordon B Hinkley was an upright man trying to do his best to lead millions of people to do good. End of story.
Dear Anonymous,
You should seek medical assistance for your delusions of grandeur, and
Mormonphobia. You must be an apostate, or as Bruce McConkie once asked, "what commandments do you have trouble keeping"
Concerned
The adage that by their fruits shall ye know them, applies to all men. Good men bring good actions, and evil men bring the reverse. The Church does not stifle thought, view, or opinion. The only time action is taken against a member of the church is when transgression of the commandments on a serious level has taken place. The Lord expects man to govern himself, based on his knowledge, and understanding of God's laws.
