Rod's fire gets iced
Rod Decker, venerable KUTV-Channel 2 newsman, over the years has developed a startling talent for shifting from poetry to punditry in a blink of the eye.
As Gov. Jon Huntsman was getting miked before his monthly press briefing this morning, Decker was spouting — as only Decker can spout — Robert Frost's poetry.
Then, the camera light flashed and Decker was on Huntsman like a pit bull o
n Paris Hilton's Chihuahua.
The governor had expressed confidence in the Legislature coming up with healthcare "road map" by the end of the session.
That was too vague for Rod: "[Lawmakers] are going to talk until people lose interest. Then, they are going to lose interest." He pressed Huntsman to give him a goal, an estimate, a guess, of how many of Utah's uninsured will gain coverage in a year.
"In a year, we will be well on our way with a framework," Huntsman said, repeating that it would be a three- to four-year process and he couldn't say what the result would look like.
Decker took another couple shots at getting a straight answer, but the Chihuahua triumphed.
If you want to see Rod do his thing, the press conference will be broadcast tomorrow, Friday, at 8:30 p.m. on KUED.

I LOVE Rod Decker. He's smart, he's still in it for the love of reporting and he's trying to do real news at KUTV, which would relegate him to the bleed and lead beat if it meant saving a bit of money.
Did you know Rod's a Neiman (sp?) scholar?
He's the man.
